Ouch. To provide context, the kinesiology complex at UCalgary has been as designed as this will be in 2024 for 5 years already iirc.

While welcome news that things are going forward, it is awful news that this likely means it will be the end of the decade before the project is done.
Perhaps the plan was initially to renovate but after assessment they found out it was better to demolish and build a new facility. Hence why plans for the new facility are a bit behind schedule.

Still seems strange to me that they got to the point where they took down the old building, while not being very far along for the new one. That's a big gap in facilities for the campus for an extended period of time.
Governance at all levels. I'd bet the Board was convinced over time that their dire warnings to the province about the state of the building would generate a budget allocation, and then it didn't so the recourse was closure and demolition. It is curious that the 2019 comprehensive institutional plan only anticipated a small amount of stabilization ($3 million) needed. The hint of dire condition was putting phase 2 of the project needing to immediately follow at $53 million.
Would it have anything to do with the asbestos in the building and the extra time needed for demolition?
Sure, that adds some time, but it doesn't excuse the poor governance that ended up with the facility getting to the point of closure without replacement.

Yes, but clearly they didn't have a system in place - they needed to start a decade before they did.

They are making it into a Basketball court

With Bird being the build partner, wonder if Chandos will be shown the door?
Chandos is engaged for full demolition & removal of the existing building.
GEC & Bird for design & construction of the new building.

The new Campus Centre should be ready long before the end of the decade (although bureaucracy so you never know).

I don’t know why the zoo has been so secretive of this project. There are zero proper renderings of what the finished product will look like. Nothing printed on all the construction fencing either.

Damn, looks like they clear cut a lot of trees for this. Hoping it turns out really good.

What was previously on the site where the polar bears are going? I haven't been to the Zoo in a long time
