Sure you could use it to go from Burlington to Oshawa, but the main goal is be a circumferential line that allows you to make regional trips that aren't downtown oriented (not requiring you to go through Union).
The same way that in London, you wouldn't use the Overground (future light blue Mildmay line) to get from Clapham Junction to Stratford. If you did, it would take 70 minutes non-stop, but 36 minutes if you take the South Western train from Woking and change at Waterloo for the Jubilee. And yet the Underground is well used.

Ultimately in Toronto, I doubt many will take the Ontario line from East Harbour to Exhibition, when they can take GO (assuming much higher frequency, without the near 10-minute hold at Union).

got a reminder of how poorly go handles issues.

Took the 9:50 train towards Durham college, locomotive had engine issues but they said it was due to weather.

It took about a hour and a half to get back to union, which is ok but the website said the outgoing trains were all cancelled so everyone was panicking if they’d need to take an uber or not.

Durham College? There’s no train to Durham College.

Oh, yeah, just call it Oshawa. It’s Oshawa.

2AM me didn't feel like typing out the entire name. I'm disappointed we had basically no communication, and when we did it was conflicting. (replacement trains being cancelled when they ended up running)

I think if you are going to Durham College, you get off at Whitby.

Just to confuse matters, there is a Whitby campus, but also one in north Oshawa, shared with Ontario Tech:

I wasn’t familiar with the campus just north of the 401 so when the name change came though I was wondering why they named it after a school several km away 😂

There is, but the transit directions from downtown (say for a 9 AM arrival) say to get off at Whitby and take the 905 bus. There is a slightly longer option to get off at Oshawa, but you have to change buses. And an option from Pickering, but again, with a change.

Looks more straight forward from Oshawa GO to me:

One bus, 27M run time.

But as you see, it only runs every 30 minutes. Meanwhile the 905 runs every 15 minutes, and takes 31 minutes. Sure, it's 4 minutes slower from Whitby GO - but the schedule says that Whitby GO to Oshawa GO takes 7 minutes. So 3 minutes slower for a less frequent bus!
