Faulty syllogism alert.

The fact (for the sake of argument) that liberalism and tolerance are more common in western developed countries does not mean that western Canadian social conservatives do not self-identify as rural, Christian caucasians to the exclusion of others.

That's triffling the point more than just a little. The assertion was that 'caucasions' are less tolerant. There is no basis for this but to point to one select minority segment and claim the whole is like it.

Many Immigrants likely have conservative social views but for some reason vote for the NDP and the Liberals all the time.

Conservatives still have a long way to go before they shake the anti-immigration label.

My Father strongly believes in the death penalty and that schools should punish students more severely and that heath care should be privatized.

Yet he says "I will vote for the liberals, till I cannot vote no more!"

Really shows the Liberal should go back to courting the centrist or traditional liberal "Chretien" vote.

Hipster Duck was saying his U.S. State has more liberal attitudes towards alcohol than Ontario does. I was saying that their ridiculous drinking age of 21 probably negates that.

Matt, the whole tailgating phenomenon where people sit in a public parking lot and drink beer before a football game is openly done and encouraged. In Ontario that would be a criminal offense. You can buy booze in a gas station. You can buy booze 24 hours a day from private stores. You can even buy booze from drive-through stores. None of that will ever be allowable in Ontario. Not now, not ever. Apart from the 2 year age difference, the US is far more liberal in its attitude toward alcohol sales.

Given that they put underage drinkers in jail, I hardly think that their actions can be considered liberal! Have you ever heard of an underage drinker getting imprisoned in Canada ... I can't even think of one being tried ...

Okay, I'll admit that the US is pretty harsh on people who break their laws. Nevertheless, for the majority of people who don't break the law, they enjoy much more relaxed rules when it comes to the consumption of alcoholic beverages.

remember the case of the black kid getting sent to ten years to jail for having oral sex with a white girl.

He was like 17, she was 14...

So the 90% of the population that they've not put in jail are the liberals?

Torontonians are conservative for the most part. Outside of some leftie academic types, most Torontonians I've met are quite uptight/conservative.

Just cruise past the numerous ethnic enclaves and churches on a Sunday morning. Or hear the homeowners in my neighbourhood complain about property taxes.

All true, but tell that to a 20-year-old who can't buy a beer.

Depends on where you live. Plenty of states ban alcohol sales on Sunday (even in NYC you can't order a drink before 11 and you can't purchase wine at a grocery store). Also many more force people to buy at the ABC stores. It really depends on the state and often the municipality -i.e. Baton Rouge versus New Orleans.

Yeah it's ridiculous you can't buy beer and wine from a grocery store and the 2 a.m. last call is silly -but then in many ways Torontonians flout these laws and have boozecans (whose illicitness is a little more fun than drinking in a bar for another hour). I find people walk down the street smoking pot more so in Canada than in the U.S. and their attitudes toward drug use on a whole are way more permissive in Canada -but again it depends where you live in the U.S.

The U.S. was years ahead of Canada on liberalism for decades (even hardcore porn was illegal in Ontario until the 90s but it was everywhere in the U.S.) and then in the 90s somewhere the country became a hell of a lot more conservative, socially, and Canada jumped ahead.

San Francisco is very liberal but the people there still wait for the light to change before crossing the street, weirdly enough.

Toronto seems pretty gay-friendly and open minded compared to other places I've been to/heard of.
