Trying not to sound like "hey look, cops" but there's a significant peace officer presence at downtown LRT stations and riding trains today it seems.
I noticed some downtown today too. Some days the LRT is great, no problems, other days not so good. I don't know if that is because of enforcement or other things or some combination of them. I do feel overall an effort is being made and it is getting better, but not always consistently.

Where are the police going to "sweep" homeless people to? Chinatown? I'm sure that will go over well. Just ask Hung Trang and Ban Phuc Hoang!

I doubt that's what's going to happen. If anything, they're going to "sweep" for vagrants with outstanding warrants and arrest them. I don't think they're going to be targeted the panhandlers and non-aggressive homeless folks

Our city administration has reported these same findings to our council that this report going to Calgary's council does:

"There is no correlation between the provision of fare gates and increased transit safety on existing systems with fare gates,” it reads.

“Other transit agencies with fare gates experienced increased safety-related incidents throughout the pandemic and increased complexity with intersecting societal considerations impacting public transit.”

The feasibility of install is a real problem for Edmonton. But it is true as well I think that Vancouver has found some success in using fare gates. It’s too late for us to try to fix our system though to make that an option without insane costs and come stations getting almost full rebuilds though. And the new valley lines won’t have a way to be gated either. Cleaning, enforcement, and zero tolerance has to be the solution. And of course all the other tools needed for the drug crisis and mental health challenges we’re seeing get worse. I think for Vancouver, it’s less about fare gates and more about the quality of station designs, the busyness of stations, and the view of the skytrain as essential.

I'm not convinced that turnstiles are a solution either. When I was in London, tube stations had attendants at the turnstiles, and I think without them people are going to just jump over the barricades.

Monitored CCTV plus peace officers is the way to go I think. Dispatch, connect to resources, and move people along if need be.
