Tory mum on whether he would take expression of interest on 2024 Olympics to council first
“Let’s start with what we do on Sept. 15, which is a letter that indicates an interest in bidding. There is then a process that unfolds that actually consists of documents that form part of a bid,” Tory said. “I think what we are doing at the moment is consulting and collecting information on whether to take that first step of saying ‘Yes, we are interested in bidding.’ As I have said, before any formal bid is launched city council will approve of it.”
[...]
According to IOC rules, the expression of interest has to be accompanied by a $150,000 deposit, however in Toronto’s case the COC has agreed to cover that cost.

Toronto police stumped by increase in gun violence this year
Deputy Chief Peter Sloly can't say why there have been so many shootings this year, adding that he's noticed an uptick in gun violence across the country.

"It's a concerning trend we're seeing this year," Sloly told CBC News. "We've put extra resources on the street, we've got extra intelligence coming in, we have extra support from our communities."

But Mayor John Tory thinks he knows why the city is witnessing so much gun play.

"There's some level of gang activity involved," he said. "There is the illegal gun trade that continues to be a real problem especially when it comes to the Canada-U.S. border."

I think the reason is obvious - spillover from the Ferguson shooting.
Maybe the courts striking down mandatory minimum jail sentences for gun crimes also contributed.

My guess is without a Ford as mayor directing these wayward youths.... :p

L.A. pitches $4.5 billion 2024 Olympic bid while Toronto remains quiet
While talks between Toronto and other levels of government continue behind the scenes, with a bid committee yet to emerge, L.A.’s Garcetti is promoting widespread co-operation.

“The political leadership of the City, County and Region stands in lockstep support of bringing the 2024 Games to Los Angeles,” the bid book reads.

Garcetti has also vowed the city will take responsibility for any cost overruns, setting out a $400-million contingency fund, leaving the city with an estimated $154 million in profit — something Toronto is not likely to match.
