I compiled a series of tweets by Gord Perks, who nicely explained how the loan program was supposed to work:

We are currently debating a "loan" program to encourage homeowners to change their lead pipes when the City changes our lead pipes. Staff have recommended that we do set up the loan program, and that we put repayment onto the property tax bill. Our Medical Officer of Health said if the public pipe is replaced and the private side isn't the lead exposure is worse than doing nothing. Our GM for Water said the evidence is that many people won't do their portion of the pipe when we do our side for financial reasons. The GM of Water estimates that 500 more families each will get the lead out if we offer the loan. Our program would be based on the successful exiting program in Hamilton. Our Chief Financial Officer said that the program will be small enough that we can front the cost from our working capital. We would not need new staff, we would not need to borrow. For no cost we can cut the # of children who are at risk of neurological damage. I am horrified that any of my colleagues oppose this.

Mayor Tory's response: "We're not in the loan business, we are in the government business". In other words, helping the public isn't our responsibility. Spoken like a true regressive conservative. Council subsequently voted it down 12-23. Thanks assholes.

so, the city's art centres get to write off millions of dollars, even though the city could wait and make them pay instead of having the city eat the costs, but giving home owner loans that would be paid back for sure (through property taxes) isn't ok, even though it would improve the health of many. crazy.

So, I took a cab home from the hospital today and it cost me $40 to go from Sick Kids to my apartment in Scarborough. Uber is apparently much cheaper, so I can understand why it is becoming popular.

CityNews reporter Shauna Hunt compared the two services that are battling for fares in Toronto.

(spoiler... the taxi ends up being about $1 less than uber... and this was before the $1 reduction in taxi starting rates)

The police board buried a publicly funded report that was supposed to recommend ways to reform policing and save money.

http://www.thestar.com/news/city_ha...t-suggesting-radical-cost-saving-changes.html
wow...
Last month, the service presented the board with a proposal for a 2016 operating budget of $1.015 billion

there are about 2.8 million people in toronto, so each and every man woman and child pay will pay over $360 in 2016.... and i don't know if that's a lot or not.

here are some american stats to compare that too...

https://wallethub.com/edu/cities-with-the-best-and-worst-roi-on-police-spending/9565/

eg. chicago has about the same population, but spend almost $500 USD per capita, but it's a city with more crime than toronto.

does canada put out similar info for us to compare?

There is no excuse to be surprised. You have to accept the surge pricing

I didn't watch the video, but there is more than one type of Uber, so yes, it can cost more, but it's also about more than the cost. On the other hand, you can get to Pearson from downtown for half, or less than half, of the cost of a taxi using UberX

"In looking at outsourcing uniform roles to civilians or private companies, KPMG considered criminologists, forensics, paid duty, court officers and parking enforcement."

If you thought the garbage and TTC strikes were bad, wait until the police union takes action for a few months.
So nobody's going to bust teens for smoking pot in the parking lot during whatever work to rule they have? Win win for society I guess?

So, my dad was downtown, I believe for the Remembrance Day ceremony and he happened to meet Andy Byford. If I had known, I would have got him to ask about the constant bus trains...
