Architect Rafael Vinoly. It turns out this guy is also good at building additions to Beaux Arts museums. I wonder what we might have got if he had won the Renaissance ROM competition?

What are the chances that a second Freedom Tower could be built? Does anybody know how leasing is going? Maybe in another decade when the emotional dust has settled and offices are buzzing, we'll see the Twin Towers rise again.
 
Slim to none I would say - the project is built on spec - and Foster's WTC 2 was going to be capped at ground level due to lack of demand. Besides, there is precious little space left on the site for a tower with WTC 1's footprint. The rendering suggests placement of an additional tower within the memorial site, which is an impossiblity.

The new & beautiful West Connector Concourse is now completed and open for business!

The ugly eyesore temporary footbridge that spanned West Street is now being happily dismantled!

Look at the HUGE SIZE of the concourse!! ;)

And some of the 09-11 relatives went to then Gov. George Pataki and asked him not to let any twin-towered complex be built there, especially not the same two buildings that were there before, so yes, that plan has been killed.

Pataki had stated that no buildings would ever be build on the former Twin Towers' footprints.

The tower is 1,776 feet high. A reflection of the year of independence.

The only trouble is that most of the rest of world is metric. It'll be 541.3 m high. Doesn't mean anything to them.

When the time came to consider whether to rebuild or not on one of the nine new design proposals, the plan chosen from those nine desgns was the one that New York wanted to go with. The first set of 6 design proposals were rejected by the majority of people

Activists and advocates were fighting New York tooth & nail in their desperate last-ditch attempts to get the Twins to be rebuilt. They failed to realise that the train has already left the station.

Even when the Freedom Tower's construction began, they just kept on saying that the tower was not going to be rebuilt. Well, here it is, six years later, the tower has been topped out with the last steel beam and the spire has been completely installed. The building is probably about a little less than a year away from completion and opening for business, yet some still want the Twins to be rebuilt or at least twin Freedom Towers.

Well, the train as already left the station, like I said, and the towers planned for the site & program WILL eventually be built as the need arises for more office space there.

That long marble wall is boring. It could have used some public art. Also, the way those arches just end at a blank wall seems abrupt. It suggests sophistication, but could have used more thought.

Maybe, in time, things might change a little.

I expect that when the reserved "dead space" on the other side of the concourse is filled with the small shops and small eateries, that the long hall will have some tables and chairs for people to sit down and eat or just relax and have a drink - sort of like a food court thing at a shopping mall.

Maybe a few not-so-overbearing pictures will be hung on the marble wall to give the feeling of a not-so-boring effect mode. A little bit of soft music in the background through a speaker system mounted above would not hurt either, as long as it is not overbearingly loud. Time will tell. ;)

Here are a few more pics of the Concourse.

1. The 1st one is an early rendering of what the concourse would look like when done. Note the differences between the arches. The present design at right was chosen to save money over the earlier more rounded design as a cost-cutting measure.

2. in the 2nd pic at right, the actually completed concourse welcomes it's first day of commuters. Note the far end where the people came in. That end will eventually be opened up for the slightly narrower Concourse that will allow commuters access to and from the new smaller Fulton Street Station which is still u/c.

The wall pictures that you see are where the shops and eateries will be put, but not for about another year or so, as Westfield, owner and operator of the concourse, mall & shops will soon begin planning a layout of the shops and which ones will go in there.

3. The 3rd pic is of the partially completed concourse that will be the final "piece of the puzzle" that will soon link Fulton Street Station to the concourse at the PATH Station, making it a complete casual walk or stroll from Fulton Street Station all the way to Winter Garden of the newly renamed Brookfield Place (formerly the WFC).

4. Finally, THIS (bottom pic) is what the slightly narrower Concourse will look like between Fulton Street Station and the new PATH Station when it opens in about a year or so. Note pics on the left wall there. The walls, ceiling and floor are of a different design and style.

In time, both concourses will be bustling with commuters walking by, doing some window shopping, buying merchandise or stopping for a bite to eat.

Also, the concourses are climate-controlled with a HVAC system to shield the commuters, shoppers and visiting people dining in the concourse, safe from the harsh elements outside year round! ;)
