Difference is that much of what Calgary demolished was SFH
Calgary earlier foray into all ways crossings (mid 50's) lasted only 2 years.

Cross there everyday walking to work, with 1st closed I do a version of this all ways crossing.

Arid grassland (Steppe) biome, of which we're still part. That's why when the discussion about how few trees we have comes up I'm like… que?

Haha I dunno about that. Las Vegas, Phoenix, Albuquerque, El Paso, Windhoek, N’djamina, Ulan Bator…. A ton of other way drier, inhospitable cities exist 
Most of them just don’t bother planting tree species with marginal survival potential. There are plenty of species that do great here and look awesome. Trembling Aspen, Birch are my two favourites, and the tall skinny aspens.
On the other hand, even though they’re native to Alberta, Poplar’s are hideous, they leaf out late and are often the first to lose their leaves. They’re also all mangled from over-pruning because of the Chinook cycle.
