The city has already killed other vibrant retail areas in the city with its "investment" (aka never ending construction, obstacles and disruption). Whyte Ave has done well over the years without too much help from them.
Maybe sometimes it is best not to mess with things too much. Really I would prefer if they mostly just left it alone. Probably so to would most taxpayers.

Funny you say that - as that's the point of this initiative.
Right now, the City might fund BRT in the next few years, but does not plan on funding public realm improvements until the 2030s. We're worried that by splitting these into two projects over the coming decade, construction impacts along Whyte Avenue will be never-ending.
The City of Edmonton should be learning from its mistakes and trying to focus construction/renewal into tighter timelines. By merging these into one project, impacts on local businesses and festivals can be more time-limited and we can get closer to a renewed corridor sooner.

I suspect there may not be as much support by businesses there when they realize the already limited parking in this area will be come more limited or the already busy road will become more congested.
It is lovely to have wider sidewalks in theory, but probably more workable in an area with not as many constraints.

City to remove scramble crosswalks on Whyte Avenue
Three intersections that allow pedestrians to cross Whyte Avenue diagonally are slated to be reverted to traditional crosswalks this year as part of a bid to help buses move faster.

Good. Even as a pedestrian first, these light sequences were awful for all involved.

I think that scramble crosswalks seem to work at moderate traffic locations. Whyte/Gateway has heavy traffic in all directions.

I feel it is also designed for places more pedestrians than in Edmonton. So if it doesn't work here, it probably doesn't make sense elsewhere in Edmonton, except possibly immediately adjacent to facilities that hold large events

And I would add further that the scramble crosswalks only makes sense when the facilities that hold large events are actually holding large events. Best example is the scramble in front of Roger's place. On hockey game nights and concert nights the scramble definitely should be used. On a regular weekday the scramble is a little bit ridiculous. I have crossed the scramble many a Time when I'm the only one crossing the road during the daytime.
