Today's 'affordability' announcement.

Federal fuel taxes (gas and diesel) will be suspended starting April 20th, until September 7th.

This, in theory, will lower the price at the pumps by 10c per L for gas, and 4c for diesel

.

Not quite unprecedented but to get past 2029 would mean the 2nd longest streak in Federal Canadian History.
I think to many Canadian minds, the LPC under Carney is almost an entirely different entity than it was under Trudeau.

Which is a marvel of marketing given that Carney's current 28-member Cabinet now contains 11 ministers (was 12 until Freeland's exit) who previously served as ministers under Justin Trudeau.

'
It's enough to get a few big things done. But not much more. And I don't expect the LPC to be in government at the next election. Mostly because that would just be an unprecedented streak I think. Hoping he can just get moving on some key priorities. HSR for me.
I would not be entirely surprised if Carney goes early if the polling is favourable, and before Trump leaves office, to have a 4 year runway to get some big things done. I would worry that doing things without buy-in toward the end of the mandate is a recipe for the Conservatives to come in and sweep it all away. Unless it is unpopular things that the CPC would like to keep but not be seen to be implementing.

Personally hate this policy but can't deny that the LPC has taken literally all of the wind out of the CPC's sails with consumer items like this.
So, are the knives out for PP? They really ought to be at this point...
Who holds the knives? Genuine question.

Carney is unable to time a Canadian federal election with Trump's death date, which is the only way he's leaving office at this stage.

HOWEVER...
Switch to summer blend

Ontario drivers will also be hit with a price increase this week as stations switch to the summer blend of gasoline, which is more expensive to produce.
Gas stations are required to sell the summer blend of gasoline by no later than April 15 (some may already be selling it), but the price change doesn’t always occur on the same date.
McTeague said the price increase could happen as early as Wednesday or sometime later in the week.
The switchover to the summer blend is expected to increase gasoline prices by five cents per litre.
That’s less than the 10-cent jump McTeague had anticipated several weeks ago, but an increase nonetheless.

They should have been after the 2025 federal election
There's no one interested in replacing PP. And besides, if change is wanted, the party can only go the unelectable Maple MAGA route, since the Red Tory space is firmly in Carney's hand.

Finance Minister will release spring economic update on April 28

From https://www.theglobeandmail.com/politics/article-finance-minister-will-release-spring-economic-update-on-april-28/

Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne will release a spring economic update on Tuesday, April 28.

The minister announced the date during Question Period Tuesday. Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Mark Carney said the update will include additional policy measures to support Canadians.

“This is going to be a plan that is going to help families. It’s going to help our industry. It’s going to help our nation, Mr. Speaker, to prosper, and to obviously bring good news to Canadians across the nation,” Mr. Champagne said.

The government announced last year that it was reversing the traditional pattern of releasing a spring budget and a fall update.

Fiscal updates have historically been limited to updating the government’s revenue and spending forecasts in light of economic trends and recent announcements. However in recent years, they have often included significant new spending and are sometimes referred to as mini budgets.

Mr. Champagne’s Nov. 4 budget projected a deficit of $78.3-billion for the fiscal year that ended March 31 and a deficit of $65.4-billion for the current fiscal year.

Some economists expect the spring update will show a bottom line that is roughly similar to the budget forecasts.

A recent survey of economists by Consensus Economics found the projected size of this year’s deficit was $64.6-billion on average.

I agree that all that remains on the right is the ex Reform and further right; indeed, the NDP likely has room to expand a bit. Of course, time will tell

No doubt the Party apparatchiks are drooling for an election but he has repeatedly said he is not interested and so far seems to be able to hold them at bay. Not having to deal with a typical politician must be driving them nuts.

I think if the NDP and Greens merge they have a chance. Though Orange + Green may equal a heaping pile of Brown. Maybe bring back the BPC?

Interesting position for the feds to take. Taxes are easy to suspend, much harder to re-apply. With how things are going, unlikely that gas prices will go back down and stabilize by September.

Also, this revenue is redistributed to municipalities to fund infrastructure. That money has to come from somewhere.
