In the aftermath of COVID there was a small movement amongst a small group that basically said it was fine to steal from corps like Loblaws because, loosely, they're stealing from us, too. Obviously this isn't me advocating for theft, but i'm going to feel less bad about thefts at Loblaws than at Joe's Convenience.
While true when viewed from the business owner perspective, the counter argument to that is that stealing from a major corporation doesn't punish corporate, but only the employees working there making minimum wage, because the allegedly educated people at corporate seem to think that, because their sales are down and they can cut hours of their employees for whom they are supposed to be responsible, my landlord will cut rent, and my stomach will cut the amount of food I need to survive, too. So one group isn't more or less deserving of pity than the other, in my book.

Of course, as someone who worked at Home Depot for 4 years, I can say that the biggest enemies to our sales were the actual managers, who routinely issued insane markdowns on slow moving merch (I have a picture on my camera roll of a shelving unit reduced from $344 to $50 for this reason), and had zero standards about returns, which led to all kinds of unsellable items being returned if a customer threw a sufficiently large tantrum, including used plungers.

I guess my main thesis is here is that people really suck lol

My father once dragged me to Home Depot when I was a teen to return a water heater. They initially refused to take it back, but he threw such a loud tantrum for half an hour that eventually a manager had to come and approve it. That was one of the most embarrassing experiences of my life. Afterwards he guilted me for slinking away so as not to be seen with him...

I'm ok with paying for things upfront, but when there's a tip involved, how do you know how much to tip before-the-fact? If I had to tip ahead of time, I would just do the standard 15%. I'm not doing the BS 18-20% they keep trying to push on us.

That's what i did 15% ...I'm not tipping 20% on what could possibly be awful service. Now a days when you tip, especially in like fast-food/take out places, the tip isn’t going to employees, the money goes to the business owners. Which is illegal!

So many restaurants employ TFW's who are too afraid to speak out. I was chatting with a TFW at a pizza chain, i can't remember which one. He leaned into me at the cash and told me to hit the no tip button on the debit machine. I said oh.... i know why...he said yep. I did leave him a cash tip and told him to put the $10 dollar bill in his pocket.

Canadian temporary foreign worker program has allowed so many companies and business owners to exploit people whose visa status & security depended on their employer.

This Canadian Tire owner scum bag was fined.

Toronto employer fined $111K for violating temporary foreign worker program rules

2 former employees said last year they were underpaid, mistreated by employer Ezhil Natarajan

Then there was the time he throttled a group of teenagers at Humber Bay Shores park because they dared to disrespect him...
I read this first thinking you were talking about Ford, and more than anything I was confused how I had never heard about this (instead of y'know, being shocked that he did it)

This looks like it is going to be a $75 million waste of money. Doug Ford and the clueless advisors that he surrounds himself with are so out of touch that they think Ronald Regan is today revered by Trump and his supporters and conservatives in general. He is not. I have heard Trump speak disparaging about Regan multiple times specifically on the issues of trade and immigration. Ronald Regan has been blamed for turning California blue by the current crop of Republicans. They claim Regan's immigration amnesty program was to blame. If Regan was held in high esteem by today's conservatives, this would have been a beautiful ad, brilliantly done but I doubt it will move the needle much.

I have emailed Ford more than once over the last six months urging him to air harder-hitting ad campaigns on American television. His first feel-good sappy "we are right by your side" campaign was a total waste of money. I suggested that an ad campaign was needed to educate the American public to the fact that tariffs are just taxes and that Trump had just imposed the biggest tax increase in history on working class Americans, a tax increase that translates into the biggest transfer of wealth from the working class to the 1%. In short, we need to wake up Trump voters to the fact that they have been conned by the biggest con man in history. I know this is a very tall order. As Mark Twain said, "It’s easier to fool people than to convince them that they have been fooled.” but we should at least try!

I also, suggested an ad campaign to educate Americans on the importance of Canada to their economy. Canadians buy more goods American-made goods than any other country - more than China, Japan, UK and France combined - over $400 billion in US goods and services a year. How many Americans are aware of this fact? I bet not many. If Americans were made aware of these facts, they would probably have a dim view of Trump's attacks on Canada. If I was an American, I would be asking "why is Trump beating up on our best friend in the world"?

It's sickening how Ontario’s enforcement system has allowed wage theft to flourish.

The 29-year-old came to Canada in 2020 hoping to get an education and earn money to help cover his mother’s cancer treatment in Mexico. Having studied mechatronics engineering in his home country, he found a job through Kijiji as a CNC machine programmer, producing cabinets and millwork. He was hired by a man named Marcin Kozuck and said he often worked 10 hours a day, seven days a week with no breaks.
In 2024, the Workers’ Action Centre conducted a survey of 513 low-wage workers — many of whom are immigrants or have precarious immigration status — and found that 60 per cent had experienced at least one pay-related violation and 62 per cent said they never received overtime pay or time off in lieu of overtime pay.

The lack of enforcement sends a message to unscrupulous employers “that it’s OK to do this because you won’t get caught and you won’t be held accountable for the violations of law,” Ladd said.

It’s not even just immigrants. This is common among all employers and pay grades.

Whether it’s expecting an employee to show up 15 minutes (unpaid) before a shift, or expecting office workers to answer emails outside of business hours.

Employers will dilute your wage whenever they get the chance.

Regulatory enforcement across the entire Ontario government, with the exception of the HTA and possibly the MNR (although their enforcement staffing and funding is pretty grim) has always been little more than in-name only. The government love to have regulations - it just doesn't want to pay to enforce said regulations.
