Was curious about what extent the gov edited Reagan's speech so I followed along and marked up a transcript. Nothing in the ad is made up or anything but the quoting is "creative", using different clips and stringing them together which I've numbered in the order they're used.

News release: Province Introducing Legislation to Build Homes and Infrastructure Faster

This is a very wide-ranging omnibus bill; I have worked on the French version of some aspects of it. Tenants will not be happy about it, among others. Security of tenure might be affected. Edit: The bill has yet to be posted on the Legislative Assembly website.

"Lease Agreement Expiry :
Under the RTA, all tenants have "security of tenure", which means that tenants have a right to remain in their rental unit as long as they follow the lease agreement and the RTA. Landlords cannot evict tenants without a legally valid reason, and after a fixed-term lease ends, the tenancy typically continues on a month-to-month basis.
The government would consult on alternative options on lease agreement expiry that could allow landlords to control who occupies their units and for how long, allowing them to adjust tenancy arrangements based on market conditions, personal needs, or business strategies. This could add flexibility for some landlords in the approach to leases, potentially unlocking additional rental unit stock."

Allowing landlords to evict more easily In a housing crisis. This is insane! This will hurt a lot of people like pensioners, people on disability, single Mom’s trying to raise their kids, no one can afford the rents the landlords are going to be charging.

I felt sick to my stomach when I read this, and I am still filled with dread as I try to understand what is being proposed. I am hoping that the reporting is not accurate. From what I read, the province said that protected renters will still be protected by yearly caps on rent increases based on inflation. How does that protection exist if a landlord can decide not to renew your lease?

I am in a rent-controlled multi-unit (~100 units) apartment building that I have lived in for around 30 years. Because rent increases have been capped all that time, the difference between what I pay and what my unit rents for new tenants is about $600 more, the last time I checked. I could not afford to pay $600 more a month on rent. I am retired on a fixed pension and can barely keep my head above water as it is right now, so I don't know what I would do.

I just can't believe that what is being reported is what is actually being proposed. This would not result in more rental units - it would result in close to a million homeless Ontarians. If something like this happened, I would not be able to afford to live in Toronto or even anywhere in Canada. I would have to look at moving to Vietnam or Thailand.
 
I can understand a desire to help mom and pop landlords deal with bad tenants but their proposal was essentially "every renter is going to have to move every single year unless they want to pay whatever exorbitant rent their landlord decides they need to pay to renew".

Can we find out how much UHaul was paying Doug behind the scenes? Cus they'd be the real winner in that scenario.

Anyway, glad they backed down. Shows how severe the backlash was that this didn't even survive the weekend.

I let out a big sigh of relief when I saw this on the news. This had made me sick with worry, and I am sure I am not alone.

I see the Doug Ford plan to to more than quintuple Toronto's homeless population has been rolled back less than 96 hours after being announced.

Good! But to the extent anyone seriously contemplated this, at all, ever, several people should lose their job, likely the Premier among them.

This proposal was nothing short of insane. I'm not prone to hyperbolic language but it was really so disconnected from reality in terms of its adverse impacts as to bewilder any sensible person.

I'm a "mom and pop landlord" and am thoroughly in favour of reforms to make the LTB resolve disputes more efficiently, but am totally against what they proposed for removing security of tenure. Security for tenants brings many benefits to the community as a whole, even if it means that Doug Ford's landlord friends can't make quite as much money.
