The reason many study abroad is that there aren't enough spots in Canadian medical schools. In that light I can see why preventing international students from taking those spots may seem reasonable. But if those international students were willing to commit to staying in Canada and moving to underserved areas of Ontario, then I don't see a downside. Rather than scouring the subcontinent for DoorDash ebikers who then protest when Canada dares to not extend their visas; these pre-meds are the international students we want.

Yes, I'm aware. I work in healthcare and with resident physicians.

I know of foreign residents that had to work in a certain province for x time as a condition of maintaining their license. I can't speak for all specialties.

No legislation yet, but this is the government's media release.

I don't know what he has said orally, but the presser makes no mention of 'foreign' or 'international". From the above link:

"Starting in fall 2026, new legislative and regulatory changes will, if passed, also require all Ontario medical schools to allocate at least 95 per cent of all undergraduate medical school seats to residents of Ontario, with the other five per cent reserved for students from the rest of Canada. We’re also creating more opportunities for Ontarians who started their medical education abroad to be able to complete their postgraduate training in Ontario."
 
From an article in today's Star. This announcement, if enacted, would largely affect non-Ontarian Canadians.

It's rage farming! I don't mind the tuition rebate/waiver for those that choose to practice family medicine. However, there needs to be a large overhaul of how physicians are compensated. So much time, energy, and expense goes to paperwork and administration.
