Disappointing tenant for such a prominent location, although arguably much better than the real estate office that occupied the space for years.

It's too bad they won't be putting signs up higher -- to block that hideous cinderblock top-storey addition.

Indeed, it is one of the most ghastly additions ever. (I seem to remember it once had signage on it. Camouflage?)

It *is* hideous and ghastly, but it's more than that. It mars what is arguably the most important heritage building on the Danforth. Playter Hall was one of the first major commercial buildings constructed on the strip, completed a decade before the viaduct, and it's a neighbourhood landmark for those travelling east across the Don. To build an additional storey out of cinder blocks, with steel girders stick out of the roof, is more than just bad, it's ... well, there is a special spot in hell for the person who allowed that addition to happen.

Charles West, right?

Correct!

I also checked out Kathi Roll on Yonge in the old Zelda's location. The food was good! The interior reno is really nice. Great lighting, hand painted tables, graffiti on the walls, and bollywood on the big screen. It had a great vibe. Yonge street may gentrify afterall.

I too checked it out and enjoyed it as well. Had a chat with the owner, he seems to 'get it' (even though this is his first restaurant venture, his background was a white collar professional)and I hope to see more unique retail like this along Yonge, not everything has to be a chain. His 'rustic' (his words) patio in the back should be open any day now too.
