Why don't they actually TRY to work with Ford if he wins rather than do everything they can to not work with him?
Ford hardly has a record of trying to work with people. Do we really need that kind of trailer trash as mayor? How is he going to get consensus? Scream at people until they vote his way? Sit on them?

A mayor has to have some some rare qualities to work with people, and build consenus. Ford doesn't have this. Heck, Smitherman doesn't have this. John Tory is strong at this - though I thought he'd made it very clear he wasn't running - and would likely self-destruct with some boneheaded idea.

Ford goes to city council, and routinely vote no to everything. His essential position is that the city should spend money on nothing other than police. Even the right on council very rarely votes with Ford.

I looked through one sessions of city council (June 23 - 24, 2008). From just that one session here are a series of motions that Ford was the only, or one of only two councillors, to oppose:

You chose one meeting 2 years ago. Did it rain that day and if so should we expect it to rain every day into perpetuity?
I think the items voted on appear to be related to funding community NGO groups.

Also, wasn't this around the time the financial crisis was blowing up as the world was poised to slide into recession? Can we really be that shocked if a fiscal conservative was voting against government spending programs in this context?

I chose that last one at random. Here is another meeting from earlier this year (January 26 - 27, 2010) It shows the same thing. This meeting focused on run of the mill planning issues, and Ford follows the same pattern of being alone or almost alone in opposing measures even the right on council supported.

The mayor of Toronto only has one vote on council. The be successful the mayor needs to be able to get the support of 22 other councillors. If all Ford can do is occasionally convince Del Grande or Holyday to join him, how will he accomplish anything?

Ford's voting record is infamous and well known. Why are you questioning this? You'll find the same thing at many meetings.

How about these more recent ones...

What is your point with the above? No one said Ford votes alone every time.

What is unique about Ford is that he habitually is the lone no vote on council. No other councillor so regularly votes against matters that everyone right and left supports.

When you're holding positions that most of the time even Mike Del Grande finds too right wing, how can you hope to get the 22 votes needed to pass anything?

If you're going to cherry pick examples to prove a point somebody else can cherry pick ones to disprove it. Besides, voting against the majority of clowns on council may actually be seen as courageous and elightened by many given how successful many council policies end up being, or are at least perceived as being...

SimonP 'cherry picked' his examples from actual city council records using the original wording of the votes. js97 'cherry picked' his examples from RobFord.ca where they've been reworded to make them sound evil.

If you're going to cherry pick examples to prove a point somebody else can cherry pick ones to disprove it.

But that's my point, how do those counter examples disprove anything? They are just a series of (failed) votes that he happens to like.

If you want to disprove the idea that Ford is unusual in voting alone against city council, list some votes where other councillors have been so regularly outside of the mainstream.

Or if you want to demonstrate that he can work to get enough votes to pass anything, perhaps you can show some successes Ford has had on council. Has he accomplished anything in the 10 years he's been there? The bio he has on his website doesn't list a single accomplishment on council. The list of council votes is a catalogue of one failure after another. A quick count shows that of the 126 votes Ford was on the winning side of only 12 of them.

I don't believe Jesus was a mainstream guy either not that I wish to elevate Mr. Ford to compete in His league but consensus for it's own sake is a losing formula.
