You may want to keep it to private communication until it's determined if there's police involvement. IMHO.

Wasn't it a few pages back that the guy is not pressing charges, due to fear of possible reprisal, but willing to testify if police does pursue a charge. Pragmatically, my 2 cents on it is don't post it publically for now. Yes it is a chilling effect but I think we're living in interesting times as the ancient curse says.

to go back to this for a second. since there is visual evidence, why didn't the police proceed with charges? 'cause if i understand the following correctly, the police could (should?) decide to charge banerjee even without Whittemore pressing them... right?

When deciding to charge a person, the police must be satisfied that there are reasonable grounds for believing that the person committed an offence. Where there are reasonable grounds, the police can begin to proceed with criminal charges against the individual.

For Somalia, “Team Canada” means more money, fewer jobs
As the diaspora return in record numbers, tension is growing. Sending money from abroad is one thing, coming back to Somalia is another.

When the government here collapsed 23 years ago, hundreds of thousands of Somalis left to seek refuge abroad. Many settled in Canada and much of the money they earned went back to relatives, providing a lifeline for at least 40 per cent of the country.

[...]

That’s generally a good news story. Many bring with them much-needed expertise, education and international backing. But there is tension. Sending money is one thing; coming back to take jobs or reclaim property is another.

[...]

Canadians have been among the most successful here, populating almost every sector with positions in the government, business and humanitarian communities.

Somalia’s prime minister, Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed, is Canadian, as is Mogadishu’s former police commissioner, General Abdihakim Dahir Saeed.

[...]

Here’s a journalist’s secret: When visiting Mogadishu, my suitcase is heavier on arrival than departure, half of it filled with Tim Hortons coffee. It feels strange bringing coffee from Canada to East Africa, where some of the world’s finest beans are grown, but Timmy’s is a much-needed sip of Canada for the patriotic.

My deliveries here have been likened to dealing crack. Speaking of which: “How is our mayor?” Jibril, known more commonly as Hosh, asks at the Maka al Mukarama on that recent evening. Everyone leans in. No one wants to talk about the Shabab, or Somali politics, or the role of the diaspora, not until hearing the latest on Rob Ford

[...]

Of course the returning diaspora are not a cohesive group. “Generally, non-diaspora Somali communities grasp the diversity among the diaspora returnees,” writes report author Maimuna Mohamud. “They distinguish, for example, between the ‘good diaspora’ who have been successful in their host countries, and the ‘bad’ ones who failed to take advantage of the opportunities available to them.”

Al-Jazeera journalist Hamza Mohamed poked fun at the stereotypes of the returning diaspora by their country of citizenship, dubbing those from Canada who are not part of Mogadishu’s who’s who as “Team Canada YOLO (you only live once).”

“They are everyone’s friends. This group treats life as a party and Somalia as a dance floor,” Mohamed wrote in a column that went viral. “They usually arrive with few things — like a minor criminal record and a Mongolian scripture tattoo they got while under the influence on a night out in Toronto. It’s hard to find them talking about serious issues. Don’t mention school — they have usually dropped out of school and are sensitive discussing this subject. If you want them to unfriend you on Facebook, tag them in photos from your graduation ceremony.”

There are parting jokes about Ford and the upcoming fall election.

I'm not a cop or a lawyer, but as I understand it yes, TPS could (should) at least investigate further with the photographic evidence. Whether that would actually happen, your guess is as good as mine. This circus is really making me wonder about a lot of things I thought I knew about Toronto.

Son of suspected Ontario Mafia boss charged after police fraud investigation

A Toronto-area businessman who runs a payday loan and foreign exchange business — and is the son of a man named as a powerful Mafia boss in Ontario — has been arrested in what police call an ongoing fraud investigation.

Carlo DeMaria, 39, of Maple, Ont., north of Toronto, faces 10 charges, including fabricating evidence, identity theft, laundering the proceeds of crime and possession of property obtained by crime.

Mr. DeMaria is the owner of the Cash House and is the son of Vincenzo “Jimmy†DeMaria, who is currently imprisoned for an alleged breach of lifetime parole after a murder conviction in 1981.

Mr. DeMaria and a co-accused, Frank Di Nardo, 32, of Brampton, the owner of SwiftX Foreign Exchange and Di Nardo Financial Inc., were asked in February about a number of cash transactions in excess of $100,000, police said.

After business records were turned over to police through court order, police suspicion did not abate.

“Subsequent investigation led investigators to conclude that the provided materials were, in fact, altered, forged or otherwise fabricated records that had been created to divert suspicion away from the accused and other conspirators while falsely implicating certain other persons in criminal activity,†said Det.-Const. Sarath Thayalan, a Toronto police fraud investigator.

The transactions go back several years.

Police are aware of Mr. DeMaria’s relationship to Jimmy DeMaria but said he was not a part of the investigation.

“I am not aware of any role that Jimmy played in this,†said Det.-Const. Thayalan. “This was not a probe into organized crime.â€

Canadian police ignored Interpol alert for alleged mob boss though they knew where in Canada he lived

An international alert accusing a man living north of Toronto of being a mob boss went ignored by Canadian police because Canada does not recognize the crime of Mafia association, the tool used by the Italian government to tackle powerful organized crime groups, an immigration hearing heard Wednesday.

A warrant was issued in Italy for the arrest of Carmelo Bruzzese and registered with Interpol, the international police agency, on April 30, 2012, but he was not arrested even though local police agencies knew where he was living in Canada with his Canadian wife. He had even had interaction with police.

Instead, 16 months later, he was finally arrested in his home in Vaughan, Ont., on Aug. 23, 2013, by an immigration task force — but he is not charged with any crime, nor is he facing extradition to his homeland.

Rather, he faces an admissibility hearing before Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Board to determine if he should be deported from Canada as a foreign national engaged in organized crime.

[...]

Mr. Bruzzese, who turned 65 in prison last week, is accused by authorities of being the head of a clan of the ’Ndrangheta, the proper name of the Mafia formed in the Italian region of Calabria. Maj. De Felice said Mr. Bruzzese’s clan is based in Grotteria, just inland from the Ionic coast.

Wednesday’s hearing also heard arguments over whether an article in the National Post should be entered as evidence. The June 26 front-page article quoted Mr. Bruzzese disputing Maj. De Felice’s testimony during a break in the hearing.

[...]

The IRB decision maker, Ama Beecham, determined the article would become part of the case’s records.

“Mr. Bruzzese may have lashed out because of his ill health or his frustration,” Ms. Beecham ruled. “You can ask him if he wants to clarify his statement.”

Mr. Bruzzese, however, did not seem prepared to recant. During a break in proceedings he told the Post he stood by the statement that Maj. De Felice lied.

“It’s true,” he said with a grin and a shrug.

The hearing continues.

Man living in Canada is Italian mob boss, member of Rome’s anti-Mafia police tells deportation hearing

Since his arrest in August 2013, Mr. Bruzzese’s lawyers have brought six motions to Federal Court for relief, all of them denied.

There are also ongoing complaints over the unusual security in place. Highly unusual for IRB hearings, metal detectors and police patrols are brought in for each of Mr. Bruzzese’s appearances.

Complications continued Wednesday.

The Italian translator who worked on Tuesday did not return Wednesday morning after “a medical emergency,” said Ms. Beecham, delaying the hearing for hours.

Major De Felice alleged the ’Ndrangheta clan that Mr. Bruzzese heads is in Grotteria, a town inland from the Ionic coast of Calabria in an area “where the strongest families of the ’Ndrangheta group exist,” he said.

The neighbouring towns are home to some of the most historically important mob clans, all of whom have connections to Canada, including the Commisso, the Coluccio, the Aquino and the Andriano families.

“They are very important families,” said Major De Felice.

He said the ’Ndrangheta’s primary criminal activity is international drug trafficking after it forged close ties to Colombian drug cartels, with its lifeblood being “cocaine, cocaine, cocaine,” he said.

The hearing continues Thursday.

no it's okay, I did read it already. There wasn't much new in there (except personal history) -- the rest was just his tweets. He could have just deleted the post, not the whole blog, no?

If I'm not mistaken, his twitter account is gone or deleted as well... geez.
