Brilliant thread idea! It really is refreshingly different than discussing Clewes vs. Diamond vs. Daniels.:)

But, this is new suburbia, correct? Some suburbs, say from the 1960's, actually look sort of nice--lotsa trees, better architecture, etc.

It's scary, but most people in Canada live closer to these photos than the few hundred thousand downtown Torontonians/Montrealers/Vancouverites etc. And for many newcomers to Canada, these sort of cheap suburbs are their "dream" homes.

It's interesting to see the subtle differences between the suburbs, the further west you go. GTA 'burbs are different than Hamilton 'burbs than Kitchener 'burbs. But the self storage places and Dumb Centres could be anywhere.

Great shots, but yikes at some of those homes. Some of them are look like they're trying to cram every architectural style going into one house and those massive, over sized portals look ridiculous.
Then again I'm used to living in house that's no bigger than one of those double garages, cheek to jowl with me neighbours.
Maybe it's just portal envy...;)

I assume you're referring to this:

What a horrible monster.

Gawd, I hate suburbia... yet, I'll probably live there one day...

Take two aspirin, rest, and call yourself in the morning.

Just think of all the stuff you'll have to buy to fill your three car garage so you can always park your vehicle on the driveway.

Great post. Good to see you've captured the South Mountain in one great post, so much different than your shots of Lower Hamilton and Dundas. That one house Ganjavih replied about certainly is grotesque.

"Now that's Barn Fresh!" - how come when I hear that, I'm thinking of manure rather than fresh produce? I wonder when Metro-Richelieu will consolidate the former A&P/Dominion brands.

I find it remarkable how unremarkable the suburbs are. At first glance you can't tell where the hell it is, yet it looks remarkably familiar and at-home.

I know nothing... nothing... nothing... but

if we put in gates, watch towers, and barbed wire, and guarded by Sergent Schultz, we can keep them in until the end of the suburban war.

I don't see the big issue with gated neighbourhoods. You never know when a baby-eating scarf-wearing Arab with a Dunkin' Donuts coffee will come by to blow up your house.

Great shots.

My house in the city is probably smaller than some of those garages, but you know, I've got a larger yard than they do. So much for suburban space, some of those houses have like a 50' deep lot. Ridiculous.

...except they're creating their own gated communities in surburbia too, lest we 'westerners' taint them with our evil, libertine ways :D

Too funny, I had the exact same impression when I saw that. Brilliant marketing or not?

Brilliant reply, Ganjavih.

I know this scene. It's in Stoney Creek, just south of the QEW. There's more the appearance of a American SouthWest style gated community because of the noise barrier.
