I'm guessing the Relief Study will say something like "SmartTrack/GO RER will provide some relief, but DRL still needed in 15-20 years"

The really pathetic thing is that in 15 to 20 years the Relief Study will say something like "SmartTrack/GO RER has provided some relief but the DRL is still need in 15 to 20 years".

Thats fine because even if we expedited the DRL to the absolute fastest completion date it still wouldnt be done until 2038 at the earliest.

So who cares?

Scientists are always saying commercial nuclear fusion is 20 years away, for the last many decades.

Want to make bets fusion will be perfected first?

From the council meeting today:

Amazingly, the Fords think SmartTrack is LRT or "fancy streetcars". They simply cannot comprehend a transit idea which is not about LRT vs subways.

The thought of a transit line that isn't an LRT or a subway like GO RER simply can't enter their mind. He thinks that SmartTrack is an LRT because it's "above ground".

Glenn DeBraermaker has one and only one criteria for evaluating a transit project: how many stops are there in Scarborough. The more stops in Scarborough, the more worthwhile it is. Apparently we should only build transit lines in Scarborough, for Scarborough no where else. Why? Because that's what the people of Scarborough want.

These people are have a one track mind and are truly religious in their repeated mantras about transit.

Thankfully, it appears that they are very much the minority. The motion to study SmartTrack passed 42-1, with only Ford voting against it.

Considering this is the guy who thought LRT replacement for SRT using exactly the same alignment will lead to roads being torn up. At least he got chemobrain as an excuse now (wait, I take that back, considering what his brain was on in general).

Am I the only one who finds this a little suspicious?

Given that the regional rail proposal is central to Tory’s mandate, it’s unlikely he will face much opposition to a request for a study, but there are some questions that may be raised. The request sole sources the study to Strategic Regional Research Associates, a non-profit organization co-run by Metrolinx board member Iain Dobson. Dobson played a key role in the development of SmartTrack during Tory’s campaign and is also the co-owner of the commercial real estate consultancy Research Corp.

The request also singles out the University of Toronto to do additional research. U of T’s Eric Miller was one of the few experts to praise SmartTrack during the campaign, giving the proposal an “A+” in an appearance on Metro Morning.

2038 at the earliest? Where are you getting this from? Even Mr. Tory wouldn't make such a claim about the Relief Line timeline.

That would be surprising since the DTRES studied a line similar to SmartTrack and found that it would be slightly detrimental to our Yonge relief efforts.

Ford isn't wrong. SmartTrack will most likely be fancy streetcars. Just like how our subways and LRTs are fancy streetcars ;)

24 years? What? The timeline has long been 10-12 years from now, and that counter is shrinking now that they are doing the EA. 2024-2026 more likely.

Not the slightest bit suspicious - it's being presented as a fait accompli. The project should be submitted to neutral third party for verification.

Agreed. Without the appearance of independance there is always a concern. From the outside it appears as if you scratch my back, I will scratch yours.
