January 13, 2020 St. Lawrence Market's operating hours changing this March Hours of operation at the City of Toronto's St. Lawrence Market South (the main building) will change for a one-year pilot project starting March 15, 2020. Plans for the pilot project are the result of a recent review of the market's hours that involved consultations with stakeholders, market merchants and the general public. The goal is to optimize the market's operating hours. The new hours of operation – which include having the market open Sundays and four evenings each week – will be tested from March 15, 2020 to March 15, 2021 to make sure the new hours best serve market merchants, the market community, Toronto residents and visitors to the city. The pilot project will inform a decision on a more permanent operating schedule for 2021 and beyond. Operating hours under the pilot project (effective March 15, 2020): Open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Closed Mondays Some holiday dates will vary during the pilot project. 2020 holiday hours will be posted on http://www.stlawrencemarket.com/ by the end of January. The St. Lawrence Market Saturday Farmers Market will continue to operate with existing hours every Saturday year-round from 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. The South Market currently operates Tuesdays through Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Fridays 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. It's closed Sundays and Mondays. The pilot's revised hours of operation are an effort to make the market more accessible, with service hours that meet visitors' changing needs and preferences. AFAIK, there is no connection - the changes on the lower level are still not funded. That said, if the Market attracts more people with the longer hours there will be more pressure to 'get on with it'. This is in the minutes of tye Market Precinct Advisory Committee for June 2029:I wonder how the changes in operating hours will overlap with the lower level renovation.
St. Lawrence Market lower level redevelopment
The City is proposing to redevelop the lower level of St. Lawrence Market. I went to the Open House on this project on June 27, where the basics of the proposal were laid out. It's important to note that this is a 1 year pilot project to gauge merchant and consumer response. Needless to say, there has been lots of pushback from some of the merchants, so if the change in hours is something that you support, make sure to spread the word and shop as often as possible at the market. A key factor will be to see if overall sales increase and to make sure that the same volume of sales is not just spread out over more hours.
Good points but I understand that the merchants are fairly evenly split between those wanting things (hours) to stay the same and those wanting to try something new.
