In light of the recent discussion on the SW Edmonton hospital thread RE a new standalone Stollery, lets keep discussion here.

To follow up on the conversation in the other thread. IF the Stollery wanted an stand alone hospital instead of cramming onto the U of A hospital campus I actually think the current Coliseum location would be amazing.
Its already transit connected.
Has major crossroads North/South and Easy/West to the rest of the city.
Is super close to Yellowhead for the large number of out of town visitors.
Would ease parking/access challenges to the already dense U of A area, something I know out of town visitors would appreciate.
And it would leave space at the U of A for badly needed expansion.
And is a large site already used to handling a huge number of visitors.
Plus it would be a major redevelopment opportunity for a spot that will likely take decades to convert to residential/commercial.

If they pair that up with a Coliseum station renewal and cover the cost of demolishing the old stadium, then that's a pretty decent idea

Except the Stollery needs to be close to the U of A and the existing hospital.

As noted in the SW Hospital thread, a new Stollery can replace the Canadian Blood Services building plus at least one parking lot.

they are not as beholding to the clinical side of U of A. the knowledge base now is better and more inhouse. They loved Uof A because of the number of other disciplines. Back when it started there were few pediatric specialists.

That area is a dump. Sorry, but they're not going to build it there. Too far away from other medical facilities. We should focus on building up the existing health clusters we already have, like near the Royal Alex hospital for example

This is the case.
For instance, the interventional radiologists look after both adult and pediatric patients.
It makes sense for the new Stollery to be connected to the U of A Hospital. (Which is why the plan is to connect it to the U of A Hospital).

I have heard that the Stollery has done very well in pediatric cardiology due to basically being roommates with the Maz. Lots of ability to share and collaborate on very complex cases.
But as I noted in the other thread, even with a well developed inhouse knowledge and programming, a standalone Stollery likely won't be able to provide the full scope of general procedures sometimes required in complex pediatric care, and some may need to be fulfilled by a full service hospital like the U of A. Very close proximity (including tunnel access) allows for easy patient transfer for those procedures, otherwise it requires EMS to transport rather than a hospital porter.

I bet the $20 million for planning is all this government will spend and plans for doing anything more will languish, much like that for the South Edmonton Hospital.

I have talked with people that were involved with this, As of Last summer they even had a location identified. they were just waiting for AI and AHS to make the announcement. Im sure if I called over they have shut down the group.

Wasn't there an announcement a year or so ago about the site being on the east side of the hospital north of the Maz?
