vs.

City-maintained, on the same stretch of pathway:

Same here, contractor-maintained in the foreground, city-maintained past the "End Construction" sign.

We can do things better.

Winter's back baby!

We really do need to rethink our snow clearing strategy for a modern 'winter city'.

I'm of the opinion that the City should should use their little sidewalk plows to do the CBD (same with the GOA and the Gov't area) before morning rush on days with significant snow such as this. Walking to work today 5% of sidewalks done before 8am and is simply not good enough for a major metro. Private clearing can be fast, but it's inconsistent and there is no reason that main areas should not be done when we know that its coming.

100%. I’m meeting with councillor Clark Thursday and will be bringing this up. In our highest density areas with the most workers and retailers, this has to be the norm.

On days like this, we should be seeing truck mounted plows out already and not sanders alone. I'm pretty close to one of the transportation service centres and have not seen a plow yet.

We need more trucks with wing plows so they can cover more areas with few trucks. Not the 8 truck caravan we now. I remember seeing in Montreal and NY how they mount plows on other service vehicles just so they can get ahead of the snow fall.

When I worked on a municipality snow plow, as soon as we had a cm, we had trucks out. even if not plowing but patrolling getting ready.

Another thing I find frustrating is how the plows will run down say 118th ave but stop when the reach the end of their district. So you can have get streets and the next knee deep snow. 137ave is another example of this.

There thats my rant for today.

Will be interesting to see what kind of budget council allocates for future snow removal - and what it means for tax increases or cuts in other areas.

This was also shared with me regarding the costs to clear the 38km of priority 1 bike lanes - it was from a council inquiry from 2 councils ago.

Anyone who lives in Edmonton for more than a few years knows our annual snow fall can be quite variable, yet we constantly seem surprised and caught off guard when we have a year with a lot of snow.

We should budget based on a 5 or 10 year average. For years when there is not a lot of snow an the budget is not used, the rest goes into a reserve and then when there is a year like this we take it out of the reserve.

But Omar Mohammed claimed bike lanes made up a significant portion of the 30mil for active modes?!?!

You mean Omar is a liar and knows little about civic issues???

Shocked.

I'll repeat it again, but we really need a rapid-response switch to clear shared-use paths along arterial roads and heavily-used areas (eg. near LRT stations) ASAP after significant snow dumps like this. The amount of snow we got, plus drifts from the wind have made every uncleared path almost unwalkable... let alone bikeable or able to be used by people with mobility aids.
