We can do things better.
100%. I’m meeting with councillor Clark Thursday and will be bringing this up. In our highest density areas with the most workers and retailers, this has to be the norm.Winter's back baby!
We really do need to rethink our snow clearing strategy for a modern 'winter city'.
I'm of the opinion that the City should should use their little sidewalk plows to do the CBD (same with the GOA and the Gov't area) before morning rush on days with significant snow such as this. Walking to work today 5% of sidewalks done before 8am and is simply not good enough for a major metro. Private clearing can be fast, but it's inconsistent and there is no reason that main areas should not be done when we know that its coming.
Anyone who lives in Edmonton for more than a few years knows our annual snow fall can be quite variable, yet we constantly seem surprised and caught off guard when we have a year with a lot of snow. Will be interesting to see what kind of budget council allocates for future snow removal - and what it means for tax increases or cuts in other areas.
This was also shared with me regarding the costs to clear the 38km of priority 1 bike lanes - it was from a council inquiry from 2 councils ago.

But Omar Mohammed claimed bike lanes made up a significant portion of the 30mil for active modes?!?!Will be interesting to see what kind of budget council allocates for future snow removal - and what it means for tax increases or cuts in other areas.

I'll repeat it again, but we really need a rapid-response switch to clear shared-use paths along arterial roads and heavily-used areas (eg. near LRT stations) ASAP after significant snow dumps like this. The amount of snow we got, plus drifts from the wind have made every uncleared path almost unwalkable... let alone bikeable or able to be used by people with mobility aids.100%.
