If I remember correctly, especially at night, they'll often not come right out of the station with sirens blaring (just lights), and turn them on once they're down the street a bit.

If they are like St Al, they only have the siren on while on the main roads. I have watch St Al FD turn the sirens off going into residential neighbourhoods at night.
But when I lived in TO beside a fire hall I got used to it. Just became part of the night sounds, Like the rumble of the street car going by.
