I didn't say it was a conspiracy? o_O

If you read both stories there are overlaps that both say business are benefiting, but that where the Toronto Star stops...

No, they are reporting on a net benefit overall... who can't understand that some businesses will do better than others?

And I don't know where you've been, but we've been making a bigger deal out of nothing lately over the Kanye West performing at the closing ceremonies.

So you are convinced that local businesses are getting shafted but don't care a whit about local artists?

...Other than Drake (who I think they said he turned down), what other "local artists" with big name recognition can you replace Kanye West with?

Nonsense. There is no evidence for what you or the writer of the article are claiming, it is lazy and sensationalist conjecture pure and simple.

This protest is about Kanye's citizenship, not his race or genre of music. Again, this wouldn't be an issue whatsoever if a Canadian artist of any colour/race had been chosen... and your 'but we're so multicultural! We accept everyone' point lost relevance in this city in about 1974. Yes, there are always going to be crackpots and a-holes out there, ready to jump onto any bandwagon presented, but let's not give them any more importance than they are due... none.

So you're downplaying or even denying the existence of cultural projection and racial discomfort in this country, more specifically, in the GTA?

Besides, Kanye is simply the headliner of the closing ceremonies. There will be Canadian acts aplenty.

Does anyone here know for the closing ceremonies that they will light off fireworks from the CN Tower again or was that only a one shot deal for the opening ceremonies?

Thanks

Anyone that doesn't listen to his music just knows Kanye as that prat who gets drunk at award ceremonies, and the fact he's American adds to the cultural insecurity. Now, if Pitbull pulls Shakira out of the wings for a duet, all is forgiven. Is the next Pan Ams in Columbia?

I don't have any racial discomfort towards Kanye or cultural projection against Americans, and I'll be happy to see how the show goes. I do have discomfort with talking heads, though. Can we muzzle the windbag politicians?

... downplaying it in this context, and rejecting the notion it is 'central' to the protest against Kanye, which was the original point I objected to if you recall. What's more, your conjecture is actually extremely racist (and ageist) - see this is fun! - in that it assumes that everyone signing the petition or in opposition to the hiring of Kanye is white and old. This is your 'cultural projection'.

Why 'other than' Drake??... Drake! Did they ask him? Metric? Broken Social Scene? Deadmau5? K'naan? Barenaked Ladies? Rush? The Hip? Neil Young? A concert featuring any number of these performers would have been a huge event.

We'll know for sure if they're doing testing off the CN Tower in the days leading up to the closing ceremonies.

Consider that the U.S. has roughly 10X the population. U.S. has 321 million while Canada has 35 million. So Canada beats U.S. on a per capita basis.

Though the US is also holding off athletes in games where Pan Am is not Olympic-qualifying. In any case, I think we did better than we can hope for.

My wife works in retail and at her store it was very busy the week before PanAm because everyone was stocking up to get out of the city. This last week it was slow because everyone in the neighbourhood is up in Muskoka.
In some neighbourhoods, isn't that true many weeks in the summer?

I think it's safe to say, that Toronto Star's financial sponsorship in the games have effected it's journalistic integrity.
I think it's safe to say that you are full of it, and that you have some kind of anti-Star bias. What utter BS!

I have an anti-Star bias but I find the "games are bad for business" theme a lame stretch. I have probably never seen the city as busy and active during these usually dead summer months as this summer. I do not observe people leaving the city for Muskoka in droves etc. either. I went to Muskoka last weekend and it was no busier than usual. Cottage traffic was lighter than usual on the 400 actually.

I have no skin in the game regarding arguments about the Pan Am games. I saw an event yesterday at the Exhibition complex and the area was busy and the mood was uplifting and fun. The TFC game added to the buzz of the area and I came away thinking people should really experience the atmosphere before poo pooing the event. My criticism was with the way in which the physical complex was organized. There was a kind of inward turn-your-back-on-the-city approach that reminded me of how big-box casinos operate. Maybe we are lucky that we live in a city where people feel free to walk around everywhere and much of the city does not feel segregated and off-limits but that is the vibe of the games at that location that I am critical of.

I went to see some beach volleyball after the TFC game yesterday, and I was happy to see the Exhibition area very busy. Really cool.
