I have seen the scale model. There is a driveway about 3 car lengths wide between the 2. Keeping the historic brick facade against the steel/glass I agree will actually provide an interesting and striking contrast.
I hope this will be a great project when done (especially since I bought a small unit there).
 
Most of these new mixed-use towers in Toronto are designed so that it is easy to see the transition from Hotel to residences except not with Shangri-la. With the Ritz you can clearly see where the hotel stops and condos begin. Same thing with the Four Seasons and even Trump to a certain degree, but every render of Shangri-la I have seen, makes the tower look like condo the whole way.

That said, I don't mind the transitions on the other hotels. The Shangrila tower really does form one sleek tower though I must say like others have posted before, I am struck by how massive it really is at the ground level. I am guessing that will be offset by the fact that it goes up 65 floors. If they keep to their render, and I hope it is silver/clear/pale grey glass, it should be a very sleep sexy tower with its various angles.
 
It has been very slow.
Apparently the first 6 floors were scheduled to take about 1 month each or to the end of Sept. Starting at floor 7, construction should go about a floor a week, or so I have been told. We will see if that happens. If so, should start to get a bit more exciting come October.

Shangri-la is moving at a slow pace? It's footprint is enormous and the podium is not a box. Does anyone remember how long it took One Bedford to get out of the ground?
