What are those little square cut-outs from the concrete on the top balcony and the roof element's vertical component?

judging by Cassius' first pic they probably have something to do with mounting points for the precast finish. The precast has not yet reached the full height of the building...

DT, what is that great ungraceful red brick building in the foreground of your second last picture?

Ungraceful? I rather like it, and it's a reminder of what Toronto once was almost exclusively: red brick city.

It's the Canadian Blood Services building, formerly known as the Red Cross.

Tewder... you just picked a fight with one of my favourite buildings in this area. Grrr. The old Sick Kids Hospital is indeed gorgeous, and I even quite enjoy the PoMo addition.
