This is one those Twilight Zone/Black Spot moments where I'm living in an alternate universe.

1. I initially thought Sam's The One would top out before this ever even got out of the ground... like watching paint dry 🖌️.

Yet now, though it's nowhere near completion, the details/glazing/colour already blow the doors off on the renderings (how is this miracle possible?).

2. This is in my top 5 favourite new skyscraper projects in the city, and it's only 5 storeys tall. 🙃

I'm in love. Thanks everyone for the yummy photos.

I hate to be a contrarian; however this is an ugly building that adds nothing to the surrounding area like the St Lawrence Hall or the old market across the road.

The cost to build per square foot must be the highest ever in the GTA.

It could have been a lot nicer design

*in your opinion.

You’re kind if stating this like a fact when there’s so many people who have mentioned how much they like the design. I like it, personally. There’s always room for improvement. St lawrence hall/old market were built in completely different times, I don’t really think of comparing them 1:1 due to the vastly different materials and costs available when building.

I would say you are out-voted on the North Market building, though I doubt any building is universally liked. Take a look back at this thread and to the thread about the design competition to see other possible designs. https://urbantoronto.ca/news/2011/10/title-unknown-0 ( I thought there was a whole thread on the competition, maybe not!)

Interesting I knew that there were other possible designs due to the design competition, but never knew what they looked liked. Nice dig up!

The original winning design is better, but given the 'cost rationalization', this is a pleasant surprise.

I think it's turning out fairly well, but I'd say that if it didn't have the orange fins it would probably look rather pedestrian.

Yeah, well, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Personally I much prefer the twin barrel roofs of what we got, to the odd (leaky) peaked roof design.

This is an odd thing to say, but I think this building "sticks out like a (not so) sore colourful thumb" and yet strangely, "looks like it belongs here".

But I'm a leftie who was forced to learn to write with his right hand, so the wiring is messed up.
