Exactly. This doesn't have to do backflips. It's just some connective tissue in the core. Keep it simple & easy to maintain, and we all win.

I agree completely, but I think they got the basic refresh wrong.

They should have hired PMA; it should have felt like a simple, clean, natural transition from St James Park to Market Street.

The lighting should have remained 'Victorian', the pavers chosen should have mimicked those for Market Street, with heritage-style benches and the basics.

The basics being, one nice, small flower display (4-season display), one drinking fountain, one water feature (simple, straight-forward and winterized)

No hand warmers, no misters, no bizarre lighting system suspended mid-air, no specialty components of any kind, no material programming.

I wonder... when they say "large boulder" in the plans for this, are they talking like a Yorkville or Sugar Beach sized "large boulder" or a Major St Parkette sized "large boulder"? The former are very popular. The latter, not so much.

They seem to be excavating the whole sidewalk on the Jarvis side so it seems they are finishing off the sidewalks. I assume the Front Street one will be done later, ideally this year.

Not so curious, the east side of the Market is finished (certainly no more need to excavate) and they are soon going to be able to install the ground floor glazing. Better to install it on top of the new external concrete immediately outside it and to install that at same time as the sidewalk. I am pleasantly surprised there will be decent sidewalk on Jarvis this winter and hope they have time to do the same thing on Front. (I assume the west side will only be done to the property line with the area further away done with the Park remake next summer.

The rendered out-cropping looks like the perfect scale to me for a (wide-ish) laneway.

Another giant Muskoka slab here would leave no north-south egress ... and likely require equipment and courage.
