Why are the Irish, Scottish and English missing on that "ethnic list?"

Probably for the same reason most Caribbean and Aboriginal groups are excluded - the list is based on minority languages, and the vast majority of people in these groups speak English as their first language. I'd wager there are very few native speakers of Irish or Scots/Scottish Gaelic living in Toronto today. In fact, according to the 2001 census, there were only 270 first-language speakers of "Gaelic languages," and only 110 first-language speakers of Cree, the most spoken Aboriginal language in the city.

The City of Toronto's Social Atlas lists the largest ethnic groups in the city as:
  • Acadian
  • African
  • American
  • Arab
  • Armenian
  • Austrian
  • Belgian
  • Black
  • Canadian
  • Chinese
  • Croatian
  • Czech
  • Danish
  • Dutch
  • East Indian
  • English
  • Egyptian
  • Filipino
  • Finnish
  • French
  • German
  • Greek
  • Guyanese
  • Haitian
  • Hungarian
  • Icelandic
  • Inuit
  • Iranian
  • Irish
  • Italian
  • Jamaican
  • Japanese
  • Jewish
  • Korean
  • Latin American
  • Lebanese
  • Metis
  • N.A. Indian
  • Norwegian
  • Pakistani
  • Polish
  • Portuguese
  • Punjabi
  • Quebecois
  • Romanian
  • Russian
  • Scottish
  • Serbian
  • Slovak
  • South Asian
  • Spanish
  • Sri Lankan
  • Swedish
  • Swiss
  • Trinidadian-Tobagonian
  • Ukrainian
  • Vietnamese
  • Welsh
  • West Indian
  • Yugoslav

This list is also unsatisfactory in my opinion, but it would be hard to come by a very accurate list considering how the self-identification thing works on the census. For example, how "Punjabi" is listed, but not "Tamil," "Gujarati," etc.

wow. there's some weird ethnicities on that list. they might as well add northern hemispherian and soviet socialist as ethnic groups.

Sorry I pulled it off a site listing off ethnic groups by "Language" found on the Net.

I edited the post. I put English, Irish and Scottish up front.

I haven't even heard of a number of these. Any more I can add?

That's a list of linguistic groups, not ethnic groups.

Ya, I know. It was the most comprehensive list that I could find at the time. It was intended to demonstrate the lack of diversity within the city program in comparison to the actual cultural diversity of the city.

If someone has a more suitable list, I'll gladly swap it out.

What is it that makes them weird to you?

the multitude of ways they define an ethnicity and which groups of people they define and how they define them:

by continent (africa)

by region (south asian)

by nation (canada)

by nations that no longer exist (yugoslavia)

by skin color (black)

by province (quebec)

but i guess since an ethnic group is defined by any grouping of people (people that identify with a group), it could make sense. maybe by this logic, paraplegics, quadriplegics, ravers, swingers, any religion, plumbers, etc. could be ethnic groups. hey, i'm an ethnic torontonian!

when ever i see these lists though, there's a bunch of specific groups but the africans and "blacks" seem to always get lumped into one category. i just think it's a shame that the people of the most diverse continent always seem to be non specifically lumped together in the black or african container. it fuels our ignorance of the african continent.

of course, we're all africans anyway. that's where humans are from. soo many arbitrary labels.

For the purposes of this discussion, I think we should define ethnic groups by the foods they eat.

Then we can ask them to share their recipes with us by selling them in little carts on the street.

I hope you are ready for delicacies such as deep fried fermented tofu (with an aroma to rival Roquefort) or pig's blood jelly with Chinese chives (that's skipping some wonderful dishes made out of assorted entrails)

I think the rule is to taste it first and ask questions later.
I'll pretty much try anything but I draw the line at meat eating mammals and primates.
