A whole bunch of pics from a whole bunch of different angles today. Getting exciting down there.

Pretty unique site in that there are a number of places where you can get a great look at different portions of it.

Hadn't really appreciated until this walk just how well integrated the visitors centre will be; this is a huge boon for the Fort.

Whole bunch of palettes of I-don't-know-what laying around.

That orange paint has stained rather quickly.

Perhaps the Gardiner requires a heavier scrubbing down.

They might look like that, but I am told they are not that as the budget isn't large enough. The Friends of Fort York are apparently trying to raise the funds to add the Corten.

I know that the original FYVC proposal included an extended decorative Corten tail that didn't get realized due to cost reasons, but I am not sure why FoFY will have to raise the funds for it now given it's basically an infrastructure project for something else. It's a little odd.

Well, yes it is an infrastructure project for someone else, who have a mandate to provide a public amenity stretched out over a kilometre for not a ton of money. So while it's not in The Bentway's mandate to spend bucks to continue the Fort York Visitor Centre aesthetic on their stretched budget, they've designed it so that if the funds can be raised by the FoFY, then it fits with the Visitor Centre design, and up can go the Corten.

It turns out that those were forms for the back wall of the Zamboni enclosure!

Update:
Since earlier this summer, construction has been pressing along for a one of the most significant new public spaces Toronto has seen in years. To be known as The Bentway, the project from Waterfront Toronto—mostly paid for by the generous philanthropy of Judy and Will Matthews, with the City of Toronto kicking in—is designed by landscape architects Public Work in collaboration with Greenberg Consultants. The Bentway will bring into public use land that has long been overlooked and ignored, pedestrianizing a 1.75 kilometre-long stretch below the Gardiner Expressway, stretching from Strachan Avenue to Spadina.

From the latest WT Board report::

Construction on The Bentway has been moving very quickly this summer. Work on the sanitary and storm sewers, watermains and stormwater infrastructure has been completed on schedule. Much of the earthwork and grading has now been completed, most visibly with the lawn area and trail access at Strachan Avenue taking shape. Construction has also commenced on the structure at Strachan Gate, as well as the Skating Building extension to the Fort York Visitor’s Centre.

The Bentway Conservancy continues to retain staff including Sara Peel, who has assumed the role of Director of Operations and Facilities. Before joining The Bentway team, Sara was the Managing Director of North By Northeast, the Manager of Events at Yonge-Dundas Square, and the Operations Strategist for the Design Exchange’s inaugural Expo for Design, Innovation and Technology.

The City of Toronto and the Bentway Conservancy continue to work on final access agreements for the site, and Waterfront Toronto continues to provide input into Maintenance and Operations considerations for the agreement.
