Space is pretty limited in those subway cars for large maps when they use the same space as ads. Perhaps adding more full rapid transit maps at every subway entrance and 2-3 on each platform would be good. This seems to be the approach that the MTA & London Underground use from my recollection.

Exactly! A person's need for map information are not always the same (or are never the same). To plan a journey you need a system map with all the options shown, once you reach a subway station you need a map that clearly and quickly shows you which direction you want to go and then you need something to tell you how many stations until you arrive. Then, when you arrive at your station you need a new map to show you how to walk to your final destination. The City's excellent TO360 project is rolling out good 'street maps', the TTC is certainly improving transit information maps but to expect one map (or type of map) to solve all of everyone's 'geographical questions" is unrealistic. It is certainly good that the work done on TO360 is being copied and used by TTC, Parks, BikeShare etc etc - having the maps all following the same conventions is a really good idea!

I liked this idea when I was in Berlin - putting system maps on the ceiling. (no trams)
The line maps weren't particularly useful - other than for the line you were on - as they omitted so many other intersecting lines.
But I guess they had to draw the line somewhere!

LOL I badgered the TTC about this specific sign on twitter last year because Brampton Transit stopped serving Finch Station in 2010. Glad to see they've replaced those old signs.

I saw in a video of the REM that they've numbered the entrances/exists on the stations there. Would be nice if the TTC adopted the practice, Sheppard-Yonge in particular could really use this, given it has 9 entrances.

Sheppard-Yonge is a real maze and would take some time to explain to anyone how to get around even with entrance numbers.

Huge improvement over the old way of doing wayfinding signs. Both the mode and the agency are clear and obvious - no more confusion about which buses the sign is pointing to. Now if only they could put in a ceiling.

Shopping malls already number their entrances, which is especially handy for big malls that you might not visit very often. It makes perfect sense to do the same in subway stations.
