It's the Toronto Sun. I wouldn't take it very seriously until a real newspaper publishes something. The complete lack of verb tenses in that article makes me question whether it precludes things changing in the future.

TTC spokesman Brad Ross said: “(Unlike Copenhagen, Toronto’s) work zones are established that effect the track both ways. Traction power needs to be cut in those work zones, which impacts track in both directions. There’s no way to divert around a work zone. Very few cities operate 24-hour subway service. Those that do have the benefit of many lines or parallel track in which to operate an express service, for example, while doing maintenance work required while the rest of the service is down.”
This is a direct quote. There is nothing here to say, for instance, "we could split the power system so tracks are powered independently". Now, of course the TTC said for years they couldn't open before 9 on Sundays too.
 
It's the Toronto Sun - I wouldn't trust them to have correctly transcribed the quote. It also only discusses the present - not the future.
 
It's time for the TTC to start renumbering the express routes, because the lines are starting to get really blurry with the current numbering scheme.

I think the first step is to resettle the 224 Victoria Park North, especially since with an express series in the 200s that would be the number of the Victoria Park Rocket.
 
The TTC can re-designate the 200 series as express routes, while the 600 series could be reused for other routes. Routes 5 to 9 might have to be renumbered to make room for new LRT lines.
 
I'd think you'd want something less mundane that 200-series for express buses. 600s? 700s? 800s? Who knows how many routes we'll have in 50 years - save the 200s for regular service.

I don't see us ever having more than 190 (routes 10 to 199) local bus routes. According to the current list of routes, we have 52 vacant route numbers in the 10 to 199 series:

With the current set of routes, moving to the 200-series for express routes and 0-series for RT/LRT would leave us with 59 vacant route numbers in the 10-199 range:
Net change in vacant numbers from 10 to 199:
-5 for relocating the current routes 5 - 9,
-1 if we keep the 224.
+8 for moving the rocket routes into the 200-series,
+5 if we move the downtown express routes as well.
(Net change: +7 vacancies)


The city is already built out to its borders and our existing 131 local bus routes already provide comprehensive coverage. I don't see how we could possibly come up with 59 more local bus routes. Most of the new routes going forward will likely be express routes, which would go in the 200 series.

Though I really don't want to start a series of responses stating why a route number should be exchanged/merged/reserved I would point out that the TTC are already proposing that their new "Front Street" bus will be 121 - it previously existed as Front-Esplanade (1991-2000). (Actually those interested in bus route numbers might enjoy looking at the transit Toronto page with histories of many (all?) of them. See: http://transit.toronto.on.ca/bus/8100.shtml )
 
Not sure if this is the right place to mention this but it looks like Dupont station now has WIFI and you no longer need to connect with twitter but you can only connect for an hour before it times out
 
Having a 200 series for express routes would suffice. That way all rocket routes, as well as premium express routes can be numbered in the 200's. The Premium Express routes may no longer exist in a few years anyways so if that's the case, the TTC wont have a choice and they'll have to renumber a whole batch of routes.

Local Express routes are fine the way they are. I think it would be a good idea for the TTC to tinker the destination signs to say "local express", but I can also see that confusing many people.
