As someone who has seen the UBC Trust develop since 1997, a bit hard to compare but here's hoping we get something akin to Edmonton.

It will take years. Transformative for U of A if they can pull it off. And could add some density especially to the 240 area. Michener Park with some commercial and more density would help give more life to that whole area as well including better ETS usage but more importantly, commercial giving places for people to stay nearby to shop.

Was just going to post this. Can't really compare the magnitude of the UBC development to this one. Additionally, UBC is a different location than West 240 and Michener in relation to boarder Vancouver.

Unsure the status of this project as this has been going back and forth for a while, but the UofA has been (sadly) contemplating a new rink.

Clare Drake is a gem, should be tastefully updated and retained on the main campus.

Walking down from 'Rez' or heading over to the main campus in the fall for a couple at Deweys or RATT and then walking over is one of the best experiences at the UofA.

There was a plan to build an addition west of the current rink over the service road and on part of the old football field which would have updated CD and found a nice balance of providing 'that would have two ice rinks, multipurpose rooms, classrooms and space for the faculty of kinesiology, sport, and recreation’s (KSR) High-Performance Athlete Training and Research Centre.' this scope as well.

Not that much further to hop on the LRT to South Campus and keep in mind all U of A students have a u-pass so no cost.

^^^. ^^^^^

where did it say this would have led to the demolition of clare drake and not been a net addition to “campus life”?

maybe - if the money is there at some point - it makes more sense to do this than closing clare drake for two years to renovate it?

either way, it’s also worth remembering that clare drake is now 63 years old…

It would be one thing if the new rink were to be built at the LRT station, but the latest plan has it on the far side of the Saville, so you can enjoy a nice 10 minute walk along the backside of a warehouse to the rink, or you could walk through the huge surface parking lot on the other side, if you'd like.

Way to continue to erode the main campus experience so they can head off to a lifeless building in the middle of a field.

No thanks.
Continue to erode? How has it been eroded up to this point? Does building a tonne of new buildings and refurbing old ones count as eroding?

They moved football south which used to have a wonderful feel tucked in next to CD arena and an easy walk over to Duke's, Sugarbowl or Sherlocks for folks pre/post game and had a decent neighbourhood walkup from the games I went to.

Volleyball + Basketball games also headed south and were a staple at the main gym for many.

I understand that South Campus is a long-term plan/goal and that facilities need to be refreshed or added over time, but since they went south I have not been to a single VB, BB or FB game and have little interest in hopping on the LRT to go to the middle of a field for sports when both used to be highly walkable, enjoyable experiences on a more densely planned campus and nearby food/bev options. I relish many games where you would meet friends in Rez or meet on campus and walk over.

Times are a changing', but it most certainly changes the experience and not in a positive way.
