If it’s worth spending billions to build a subway in Scarborough it’s worth properly linking the waterfront to Union: Keenan

Fully agree with this article. The only true option is to expand the Union loop. We are overspending to save 2mins on the Gardiner and $3.5B on a subway extension to remove a transfer. Why would we even consider adding a 1-2 extra transfers here when the Waterfront is growing tremendously. It’s insane.

If there is a commitment to rebuild Union Loop I would argue that the construction closure should/must be concurrent with the minimum remaining works on the QQE portal/ROW and Parliament Loop. Union Loop will be a massive project and getting the delta junction operational and allowing the restart of 509-510 to Parliament at the earliest possible time should be a goal. Of course, even then TTC will probably prefer to bustitute as it still won't have enough streetcars (will it ever?)

Why not just run it on surface in the curb lane along Bay up to Queen or Dundas / College / Bloor. The curb lane is already restricted from 7am to 7pm... or alternatively put the transit lane in the middle and you have a dedicated ROW along Bay.

They could resurrect this plan:

The equivalent to SSE would be to run the waterfront line up Bay. It would keep at the waterfront travelers off the subway - I am not sure if the report talked about how many of these passengers would walk and how many would take subway. Would it help if GO to subway (and vice versa) were relieved by this new line?

I think that the suburban anti-transit politicians will be going for the cheapest alternative to the current streetcar tunnel, and definitely not expand the streetcar loop. Not for the sake of the transit user but for the almighty dollar and not to anger the automobile gods.

This is similar to what is happening in Maryland. The Governor there didn’t want to spend $2.9 billion on a “wasteful boondoggle” of a 14-mile light rail route, but is fine with spending $9 billion on widening three highways. See link.

we have to save money for subways on sheppard and to STC so that car drivers wont have to fight off evil LRTs.

The Waterfront LRT connection should really be a separate issue from any Gardiner talk. Wasn't the $2B for that over like 100 years? The LRT connection to Union should be a no-brainer. Has this LRT had a preliminary design yet?

I don't think the issue is cost so much as complexity. It's one thing to create spaces in adjacent basements and knock through but a loop rebuild would be years long and would require full closure during much of that time. If the Bay tower can create space for two Flexity services to more easily coexist then go with that, otherwise run the 510 out to Queens Quay East and increase frequency on 509.

Very hard to see the very prominent developers, companies, and educational institutions that have already moved into the East Bayfront, or are planning to, putting up with a half-assed solution. Hoping the one-way walkway and the Gadgetbahn are both DOA in favour of doing this right. If this isn't the place to invest in the right infrastructure for the long term, where the hell is?

There must be ones who still think Bay Street and Queens Quay look like this, and we are still in 1928:

If they rebuild the University platform should also get easy access to the streetcars perhaps by building a loop or station underneath Union.

David Miller had a 'cheaper is better' attitude but he was not some suburban anti-transit politician. You are quite funny
