cant recall if we have this render for 17th ave project

11St has a Ctrain station on it at 7Ave, 11th is one of the busiest N-S crossings now because of it, that street should be far and away the #1 priority for an underpass.
Goes back to funding. Can't use the EV/Vic Park CRL money over at 11th Street W. I agree 11th is a priority but connectivity as a whole in the core really needs to be addressed (to CMLC's point). You can't have a successful urban neighbourhood without better access. The city has done an extremely good job on river bridge connections for pedestrians, cyclists and transit over the past few decades, that same long-term and holistic approach needs to be applied to all heavy rail crossings. Really expensive of course - but chip away at them one or two per decade. It's crazy from a logistics, safety and convenience perspective that we have so many at-grade crossing in the core and elsewhere (11th Street, Highfield Road, 50th Ave S, 61st Ave S by Chinook, 17th Ave SE, Heritage Drive etc.)

IMO it's really another example of suburban projects being prioritized - or at least distracting budget attention - from obvious established area ones, centre city or otherwise. We built how many new interchanges in the burbs in the past decade? Surely a few established rail crossings would have ranked as a higher priority than a greenfield interchange with far better real delay/collision data supporting the necessity of grade-separation (from being there for literally forever).

It's also one of the busiest because it is the only crossing within 6 or 7 city blocks. Where is everyone going to be diverted for the year or more needed to build an underpass there that doesn't blow the budget? Phasing the work with an open crossing is going to take a lot more time and money. You may get two underpasses for that price. Three city blocks between crossings creates to much of a dividing line between downtown and the Beltline

good point but its only going to get worse where 5st wont see much traffic for quite some time

I'm a firmer believer in infrastructure before intensification. It's the right time to build the 5th street underpass. Worst case would be to postpone construction and end up with the same situation as the West End in 20 years time. Let's get the East Village right.

The city can look at doing a temporary crossing at 10th street while doing the 11th st as an underpass. 11th is busy and is becoming a safety issue.

Doesn't look like something that should be associated with 17th ave.
Yeah, you're right, it's not something that should necessarily be associated with the street retail section of 17th ave, but this is quite far down from where the street retail corridor on both sides ends and is also not a very pedestrian traffic area.

Every time a city is having major issues with a federally regulated agency I’m reminded of the time that Mayor Daley sent bulldozers in the middle of the night to rip up the runway at Meigs Field airport. Maybe that’s the solution to get the railway rerouted out of downtown. ;)
