Will this be of any benefit to VIA in terms of keeping on schedule for the Canadian?

(new passing track near Sioux Lookout)

It’s a baby step forward... cant hurt, but realistically, it won’t help much in the short term. The ‘long’ sidings up north are still too far apart, and there are too few of them. Once a VIA train catches up with a 12,000 foot freight, there is no place for it to overtake the freight, so it has to plod along behind it at slow speed. Any ‘long’ siding that is reached will be occupied with an equally long freight coming the other way.

CN is trying to keep up with growing freight volumes, but not add a cushion to help VIA out.

VIA Rail has signed an agreement to resume service on Vancouver Island. CTV News Vancouver Island video report here.

I think this report is out of date. The MP interviewed was last an MP in 2015, and at 1:54 they say "September 2015" as the completion date. Please prove me wrong as I want this service restored, but I couldn't find anything else on it.

I struggle to find any date with this story nor did Google surface any recent news items telling this story...

Sorry for this. You're both right. I can't recall where I first saw it. Unfortunately these CTV News videos don't have dates attached to them in the text of the page. Apologies.

Yeah it is annoying how CTV does that. Wonder what happened that made this deal fall through. Here is a more recent article on the issue.

For recent news on this 'project' (returning passenger service to Vancouver Island), this is probably a good source.

When I googled that article, it gave a date of Dec 2017, but not sure of that.

Transit on Vancouver Island is simply atrocious! If you visit the island and you don't have a car, you are pretty much screwed.
I went to Vancouver Island for a week last January, looked at the lack of bus service, and got a car instead.
