The government has already had to admit that the rails will not be Canadian content because after the glory years of DOSCO, Algoma et al, no rails are currently produced within Canada's borders. That's a pretty basic component for any railway, high speed or low speed.

i like how we continually shoot ourselves in both feet and in our knees just to fulfil the virtue signally. no wonder govt contract costs skyrocket vs other countries.
It’s in the very nature of negotiations (at least between partners with somewhat similar leverage over each other) that you only get something you desire if you accept at least some of the demands raised by the opposite side of the negotiation table. With Europe having a strong rail rolling stock manufacturing industry and Canada’s being only a shadow of its former self (and most of its scrapes owned by a European company), this was understandably not the hill on which Freeland and her negotiation team were willing to (let CETA) die. I dont want to imagine how vulnerable Canada would be right now if it had not diversified away from its toxic and abusive ex-partner to the south…

So likely there would be no benefit for the Canadian economy in terms of building new trainsets.

The cheapest way to tender a new LD fleet would be to give it to Siemens. It would consolidate the rolling stock and parts inventory.

I hope that doesn't happen given the reliability problems given with these trains, especially in the cold.
