It's anti-elite, but I wouldn't say it's about what you "hate". More about having inconsistent views and values on issues to please a general public. I do find using populism pejoratively is not helpful. We tend to use it pejoratively because we don't like the result of a Ford or Trump win, but Horwath and even David Miller had similar populist appeal, and we don't seem to be so liberal in applying the term to them.

I assumed it was a name making manoeuvre for future ambitions. If Tory had an actual alternative she wouldn't have gotten much attention at all.
I kinda expect her to run for a seat at the federal level.

Well-connected, indeed, but I don't know that Tory has ever shown himself to be a "deep thinking fighter" at any point in his political (or business?) career.
Nevertheless, I wish I shared your optimism that populism is a mere experiment that can or will subside. We're not quite Weimar Germany c. 1932 yet, but there are way too many parallels for me to feel comfortable.

I'm voting Tory and probably Layton in my Ward.
It's rare that I vote for incumbents but I think, especially with the political boundary changes, that we need continuity above issue specific debates. I think Tory occupies the right political landscape as well for the City at the moment and his stated plan to step down at the end of the next term is a big positive for me. I think in 2022 Toronto could use some fresh blood and new ideas.
Layton is a good Councillor that I appreciate for his reasonable handling of local issues although I disagree with him fairly consistently on City-wide issues and would never vote for him where he to run for higher levels of government under the NDP banner. I told him basically exactly that when he came to my door.

I don't know who to vote for as councillor. If there were some polls done to see who can squeeze Grimes out - I'd vote for them, but I don't believe polling was done.
Amber Morley is my bet - but there are too many cooks in the kitchen - Grimes will likely win.

I will vote for Saron Gebresellassi.
I don't completely agree with her vision of the future of the city, though no candidate proposes a vision I completely agree with. I see half of what she proposes very impractical to implement. I believe that's because there's a knowledge gap of the internal workings of municipal and Ontario politics necessary for a mayor.
So why would I vote for her if I think that? I like the ambition. I like her fresh (far) outsider perspective that acknowledges there's a really bad need for change and that we need completely new ideas, even if she lacks the knowledge to pin down exactly how to do it.
But doesn't Keesmaat have that too in her platform, you may ask (did she ever really produce one?) No. Her platform is fantasy urbanist porn for sharing on Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat. It's incompatible with how people actually live their lives outside of curated social media accounts. I suspect we will hear cliched lines on Monday night like "I can't believe Tory won. No one I follow on Twitter voted for him!"
That being said. Tory is a lazy idiot and I can't vote for him. But he will win.
So I will vote and donate cash for Saron, even though she will lose. What I hope is my vote will be one of many to encourage her to stick with being involved, gain experience, and maybe next time she will be ready. I love her enthusiasm and drive. She is a long term great candidate.

Me, Keesmaat is my choice for mayor, and since I live in Eglinton-Lawrence, Dyanoosh Youssefi. Mike Colle is such a great person, but I'm going for Youssefi instead.

Johnny5, sorry but your otherwise reasonably argued post is tainted by leveling the criticisms of lazy and idiot towards Tory. You can claim he represents everything you dislike about the City or the establishment or that he has poor judgement or doesn’t represent your views. But the man literally spends every waking hour working for the city.
