I also really like it! This is right in the West Harbour neighbourhood steps from James St North and the Bayfront.
Also steps from the proposed James North GO stn.

I like how they added balconies to to sides of the brick units as well. When it comes to lofts, I would rather buy one with a balcony which is rare (especially in true lofts).

Brave new world — luxury condos north of Barton

A small hatch in the ceiling leads to a narrow wooden ladder. At the top, a door opens onto the roof.

The view from there is what sealed the deal. Condos can work here, the two developers decided. It’s a $10-million project, in a part of town not used to that kind of investment.

The building is McIlwraith School, built 86 years ago on Murray Street West, up near the tracks, between Bay and James.

The view is the West Harbour, where the spotlight shone all summer long during the great stadium debate.

And the developers, well, they’re an interesting pair. The young guy is Steve Kulakowsky, 26, of Core Urban Inc. The other guy, precisely twice his age, is Dave Sauve, ex-Ticat president and owner of seven local Tim Hortons.

The two are going where others have feared to tread, north of Barton.

Construction of Witton Lofts is to start next summer, with completion the following spring. But to see about a unit, prospects will need to head to Locke South at Pine, where a sales office opens Oct. 16. Murray Street just doesn’t have the passersby, Kulakowsky says. “And Locke Street has the demographic we can draw from.

“We want to make sure this project works. We want people to live down here.â€

StreetBeat appears Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

On the opening weekend, 21 of the 36 units -- close to 60% -- were sold. Most of the glass-level suites were sold and almost all of the corner units.

The original brick structure was designed by William Palmer Witton, a noted Hamilton architect, and the new glass-and-concrete structure by Lintack Architects.

From about $180 to $240 for brick-level units and from about $300 to $320 for glass-level units.

Thanks Martin. Are you a Hamiltonian? If so, is it just me or has there been a surge of highly successful condo launches in the city lately?

Yes, in 2010, there have been many successful launches or re-launches (Stinson School Lofts, Herkimer at Bay Condos, Filmwork Lofts, The Hamilton Grand, Urban West Condos, and now the Witton Lofts). They likely signal the emergence of a viable condo market in downtown Hamilton.

This is extremely heartening to hear. The City has an incredible stock of century buildings just waiting to be converted and
an abundance of re-development lots in excellent proximity to the City center. Question is, will local demand be enough
to support a continued demand for condos in the area?

Just read about the 21 units sold during opening weekend.. amazing!

Can't forget some other recent successful loft/condo projects downtown Hamilton such as the Annex Lofts, Core Lofts, with no doubt more to come (with interest surrounding the Beasley neighbourhood's historic victorian warehouses such as the Imperial Cotton Mill at Cannon & Mary).

With the remediation of the West Harbour, All-Day GO Service to James North GO by 2013 (construction to begin in 2011), and an increase in urban density, Downtown Hamilton seems like the only economic choice to 'real city living' outside of downtown Toronto.
