couldn't disagree more (and i hate Kenny). At this point if you want a vaccine, you can get one. They should not delay the reopening because idiots think the vaccine will give them autism. The most vulnerable people are fully vaccinated, at some point we need to accept that COVID isn't going to completely go away, but if there is minimal risk of people dying from it, then we need to get on with life.

I feel Kenny rushed the re-opening, and should have waited a bit longer to see how the new variants play out, but you bring up a good point. It looks like it may not go away anytime soon, and at some point we need to decide it's under control enough and re-open again. Maybe that time is now. Myself, I would have waited another month to see how the virus trends given the percentage of vaccinated people vs the variants.

It appears that 9 councilors and our mayor had some sense this time around. While most still voted to maintain the by-law for municipal faclities (public transit, libraries, rec centres), at least those ten recognized they can't enforce it everywhere else, nor should they try to. Calgarians will not stand for it when everywhere else in the province is maskless. Hardly any by-law tickets were issued over the last year, and most either have not been paid or were revoked. Instead, business was left hanging to take the abuse from the public.
As stated in a post above, we have got to learn to live with COVID like we do every other virus and potential disease in society. With vaccines, the risk of serious illness or death is greatly minimized. Time to get on with life ... variants or not.

I would argue that the mask bylaw provides cover for businesses to enforce masking.

I get the rush to reopen businesses. I even get the rush to have the Stampede. I just don't really understand the rush to take off masks. It's a piece of cloth. My toddler has no problem wearing a mask. Why is it so hard for grown adults to wear one?

As for the vaccines, with 23.4% of our eligible population still unvaccinated, Alberta is dead last among provinces and territories. Add to that a relatively large portion of under-12s in this province (14.9%) and you get to a pathetic one-dose vaccination rate of under 62%. I really want to believe this province is different than the way we're stereotyped in the rest of the country, but sometimes we really live up to those stereotypes.

As much as I would relish seeing Jason Kenney squirm as he has to backtrack on reopening for the third time, I really do hope our feeble vaccination rate is enough to keep the R value below 1. There's not much wiggle room in our ICUs and COVID patients are still occupying about 20% of typical capacity.

Bad take. It’s pretty much over. Get used to it. In 4 weeks we will have 76-77% first dose and 70% double dosed. Get back to living.

We have specialists that helped with the reopening. Knowledgeable.
 
Masks were necessary to limit the spread of COVID when there was no vaccine or treatment for serious illness and potential death. Today, we have vaccines readily available. To my knowledge there is no supply shortage therefore no excuse not to get vaccinated. While under 12 years has not been given the green light, that segment of the population is not at risk. Our most vulnerable population, the elderly and infirmed have been vaccinated. There is data all over the world to prove that the variants are making non-vaccinated people ill and potentially leading to death. If you are a teenager or adult, have not been vaccinated, and are worried about the spread then you have two choices. 1) Get vaccinated immediately or 2) Don't go out in public and if you do, wear a mask. Society should not be waiting for assurances that this disease is going to be eradicated because it is not. Therefore we cannot live in fear of it.

Do we really though? All through this pandemic, we continue to learn as we go, and I think we will continue to do so for a while yet. We haven't fully seen the affects of the variants yet. If you look at the UK numbers you can see that the number of cases has skyrocketed despite the solid vaccination rate. I suppose they have to re-open at some point, but I think they would have been better waiting a bit longer.

Those who aren't getting vaccinated are stupid or are reasonably smart people who uninformed. In the end they'll probably be the ones paying for their stupidity.

Robson Fletcher posts daily updates on the breakdown of the current ICU patients in Alberta. There's currently 32 covid patients taking up ICU beds in the province right now.

Assuming the 32 patients are all or almost all above the age of 12, the stats are pretty damning:

Unvaccinated: 27% of the +12 provincial population, 80% of the ICU population

Partially vaccinated: 25% of the +12 provincial population, 17% of the ICU population

Fully vaccinated: 48% of the +12 provincial population, 3% of the ICU population
 
Thanks! That makes sense, and with things opening up people who aren't vaccinated are going to be even more vulnerable than they are now.

I found an article that says 85 of the cases in the Yukon are non-vaccinated people. Over time it's going to be narrowed down more and more to people aren't vaccinated.

My suggestion to government to get more people over the hurdle of vaccination

1. Be specific, and repeat often, the types of social interactions (i.e air travel, attending university, large scale sporting events and concerts) that are going to require proof of vaccination.
Let that sink it with the public for a little bit and then ...
2. Announce that up to a certain date, the cost of COVID vaccinations will continue to be funded 100% by public health care. After that date, anyone wanting to get vaccinated it will cost $200 or some number, that will give people further incentive to act now.

My guess is that the real percentage of people that absolutely will not get vaccinated for any reason whatsoever is probably down to 10 or 15% of the population. If that is the case, then they have to live with the health consequences and loss of certain freedoms.
