Does anyone know when the west portion of New Vision is scheduled to begin? This area looks horrible, and it's an embarrassment.

I received this update in May from city. I will message for update.

"We are currently in the process of finalizing the detailed design and expect to tender the project in late fall 2024. Construction is anticipated to begin at 114 Street in 2025, with the contractor determining the specific work schedule. We estimate the project duration to be approximately three years, but this will be confirmed once the contractor is selected."

The federal government's $400million active transportation fund is helping to pay for some of this project's work - sidewalk, street furniture, lighting etc.

I'm talking specifically about the 102nd Street to 109th Street stretch. That's the New Vision area, while west of 109th is Imagine Jasper.

Note that Jasper Avenue New Vision (102 to 109 Street) is currently unfunded. Will need to push hard when Capital Budget is up for discussion next fall (after next election) either through taxpayer funded infrastructure renewal or CRL. Current forecasts for CRL doesn't have money in it for this project (CRL currently ends in 2034).

Once 124th-116th Imagine Jasper is done, I think it'll probably be one of the busiest pedestrian areas in the city and one of the nicest too. Would have been even nicer and probably busy with bus lanes but I digress.

Jasper Ave is probably more important to fund than almost any other infrastructure project as it's considered to be the main street in Edmonton, an extremely rich city in an extremely rich province. It's embarrassing.
Truth. I wish they would just prioritize this over almost any other road rehabilitation project in the city, power through it, and get it done.

Of course that would mean a whole host of city employees working on the project for two plus decades the way the city chooses to handle it would then have had nothing to do after the first four years it should have been completed in. As it stands, by the time the last phase has been completed. It will be time to redo the first one (which still hasn’t actually been completed).

"The Imagine Jasper Avenue project is inching closer to being fully realized as the City of Edmonton seeks out a contractor to deliver the second phase of the project, which covers 114th Street to 124th Street."

"Neal LaMontagne is a faculty lecturer at the School of Urban and Regional Planning at the University of Alberta.

He said the project is a good step forward but adds he wishes it was more ambitious.

"It's very standardized, and it lacks colour. It lacks a little bit of oomph that we might need if we're going to realize Jasper's older potential as our ... premier main street," he said in an interview.

"It's sort of a backbone project. It's the type of things that you need, the physical infrastructure you need, but it's not going to create much of a catalyst effect."

LaMontagne said Edmonton needs to make its public spaces, particularly downtown, more accessible and fun.

"Phase 2 of Imagine Jasper is expected to start next spring with the city hoping to finalize contractor procurement in early January."

Spring 2025? Or 2026? That sentence is oddly worded if procurement begins in January.
