The by-election must be called by June 30 (six months from Notley's Dec 30 resignation) and the writ period is 28 days. So late July at the latest.

If she waits as long as possible, Nenshi continues having no seat in the legislature. The "Outside looking in" isn't great from an optics perspective.
There's no way it'll be called sooner unless there is reason to believe the UPC could take Strathcona.

I would guess they will wait as long as possible. It isn't a big deal, but it means he isn't an official MLA during Stampede. So if there is a role for the Official Opposition Leader, such as marching/riding in the parade, it goes to Christina Gray, not Nenshi.
