Globe Series on Tourism in Toronto

Ontario Place Thanks for pointing this article out. I love the buildings in Ontario Place and I love the suggestion they offer of what to do with it. Perhaps it's time to email my MPP?

    Shabby Toronto

I moved here 8 years ago from Alberta and I definitely had to get used to the messiness. I was surprised and how run-down even the prime areas are, like Bay Street a few steps south of Bloor, and most of Queen West including Queen and Spadina. And the shabbiness goes beyond badly-patched...

    New Cumberland Station Entrance

I get it now: the TTC's new policy is to not clean or maintain stations and just wait to demolish and renovate after a decade or three has passed</sarcasm>

    Christmas in Toronto...

I have this problem most years as well. Chinatown and Little India are good because they're as lively at Christmas as any other time of year. The ROM is open most days over Christmas. One year I tried the Distillery District but it was very dead, I wonder if that's changed. Another thought: St...

Bridge, The + Connect (Urbancorp, 22s, Kirkor)

I was at a meeting with Urbancorp where they discussed this project which they confirmed was originally supposed to be designed by Alsop, but now is Kirkor, and a future one they want to get approval for which would be in the triangular lot just to the east of this building. Alsop may have...

    Starbucks

Sorry, I don't know, just hearsay. _If_ the Starbucks opens as this guy said it would (I'm guessing sometime before Christmas) then I'll have my eyes open for the Cineplex.

    2007 Ontario Election: MMP Referendum

I just hope that people are really aware of the options and are able to make an informed decision by the time the election comes. The results from previous referendums in BC and PEI suggest that the electorate is likely to be disinterested and uninformed. I've had a number of conversations...

    Starbucks

Starbucks coming to King W & Dufferin? A friend of a friend who works at the starbucks at King and Strachan told me he's being transfered to a new location at King and Dufferin. He said he also heard they're opening a cineplex in the same building. The only location I can think of that...

    2007 Ontario Election: MMP Referendum

Knowing there are pros and cons - with MMP we're going to see better representation from views outside the mainstream, but unlikely to ever get a majority government - I'm reluctantly in favour of MMP. I hope through MMP we can have government more like northern European countries where...

    Toronto's local micros & brewpubs

Volo and Bow and Arrow, both listed on ratebeer.com, are both excellent. Volo is more of an Italian restaurant, but with an amazing beer list. The Dominion at Queen and Sumach is also very good. All of them usually have a few good Ontario beers on tab. Some beer to try: Black Oak Pale Ale...

    Toronto Tourism

Hydrogen, Ontario Place is a failure because the buildings in it are so amazing but the only people who even get near it are, with some exceptions, people driving cars who don't see anything else. And conversely people who go shopping on the West End (King and Bathurst, Queen and Strachan) would...

    Parkdale graffiti

The skulls are adorning a building that is apparently the workshop for a company called Playdead Cult that makes T-Shirts and stuff. You can see their stuff for sale here and there. http://www.playdeadcult.com/ Also, there's at least one person who's making 'grafitti' out of copper and...

    Toronto Tourism

I'm definitely of the opinion that CNE and Ontario Place are big failures. They've been designed like distant suburban fairgrounds with large parking lots and no consideration for integrating them with the rest of the city. Try cycling from Harbourfront to Sunnyside beach and you'll see what...

NDP the ones to save Toronto and actually make us Prosper!?!?!?

It's a good time for Ontario politics - I think John Tory and Dalton McGuinty are both excellent candidates (far better IMO than any of the federal party leaders). The NDP lack a strong candidate, but this is sure to kickstart dialogue about urban issues in Ontario and may win the NDP enough...

    City Reports 2007

I attended a meeting with Urbancorp and residents of the townhouse development southwest of the Queen West Triangle, King Towns, on Thursday night. They intend to build a 20-30 story condo in the undeveloped portion of the lot just north of King and west of the tracks, in the southeast...

I need to know whether this is faked

Got a series of dialogs 'warning' me about security risks and asking me to download some sort of software... okay/cancel. I clicked cancel and only got more (of course) and eventually my browser prompted me to download an .exe. I guess doesn't show up every time you hit the site.

I need to know whether this is faked

Some malicious ads on that page tried to force my browser to download an .exe - no doubt a worm or trojan. I wouldn't click on that link.

    Toronto Unemployment Surpasses Montreal

Perhaps I spoke too soon. I remember reading a few years ago that Miller intended to ease business property taxes. This article from March 2007 contradicts that: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/LAC.20070327.BUDGET27/TPStory/TPNational/Ontario/ "The tax increase for city...

    Toronto Unemployment Surpasses Montreal

I believe this story is more about an improvement in Montreal unemployment than about an increase in Toronto's. Montreal is a cheap city to live and do business in, and has prospered recently since separatism has ceased to be such a threat. Montreal nearly cut its unemployment rate in half, and...

    Sky farm proposed for Toronto...

Yeah, I don't know about a farm, but that rendering looks pretty cool. It's like a green roof taken to its logical conclusion.
