Alberta could give both Edmonton and Calgary 2 billion and be done. But its unlikely Alberta could be ready by 2026. But maybe if all stops are pulled out. There is an issue at play in Australia moving towards a republic - whereas in Alberta our support for the Commonwealth would be much stronger and with ongoing ties to the monarchy and the UK in general. By rescuing the games we might be setup to be on permanent rotation for future games - say every 8 years much like the IOC is contemplating for the Winter Olympics. Likely this could be negotiated right now as part of the package to step in and would be a great boost to both Edmonton and Calgary for the long term.

"Considering the dearth of candidates to stage the Winter Olympics amid spiraling venue costs, the International Olympic Committee may have to resort to lining up a list of fixed, rotating hosts. A highly theoretical list could include Salt Lake City and Vancouver in North America, Pyeongchang, South Korea in Asia and places like Switzerland, Italy and Scandinavia in Europe."

Calgary will not likely be the IOC choice for Canada in the first instance.

 
Given the tight timelines, at this point it might to make sense to focus on a city that had experience previously hosting this event and some facilities already in place from that. Just a thought.
 
^Birmingham is rumour to host it again in 2026 but UK PM said Australia should try to find a way.
 
According to BBC News, the costs skyrocketed in part because of decisions made by the locals.

CGF said the estimate of A$6bn is double the figure they were advised of at a board meeting last month, and that the increase in costs were due to the "unique regional delivery model" that Victoria chose for the games.

The government had made decisions to include more sports and changed plans for venues, often against the advice of the CGF and its Australian arm, all of which added "considerable expense", it said.

The Australians seem to have shot themselves in the foot on this one and are trying to save face by putting blame on the Commonwealth Games Federation.

Given that this is an event that is scheduled only once every four years, I'm assuming another host will be found rather than just scrapping 2026 entirely. We may see a scaled-down, "budget friendly" Games somewhere else. Skipping 2026 would raise uncomfortable questions about the future of the Commonwealth Games as a whole.
 
Concur, is there even a dude/dudette dressed as a cowboy riding a horse with one of those stoopid white Stetson hats that they all wear for 1 day/yr…….all clear signs of a cowboy?

To the casual observer who can tell the difference between one sky line and another or really cares. The overwhelming impression is that of their identity.
 
^I find that this site gets very upset if Edmonton does not get its fair screen time.
 
^ maybe because some are so quick to point out how crappy we are at grabbing headlines and how great our friends to the south are. For me the overt, almost "in your face "favoritism from the Klein years still stings pretty badly such that any hint of favoritism, intended or not, does not sit well.
