Oh the insanity
“Madam premier, you dropped this.”

Oh the insanity
I get the Premier may want to humour these people some because they are voting for her or likely to vote for her, but really enough!

Don't go on about how it may be the US Department of Defense doing this and add to the conspiracy theory smorgasbord, which is already too much.

I don't think anyone was arguing we are lacking in liquor access
There is a hypocrisy, or at least a contradiction, in the UCP loudly proclaiming how it is free enterprise and upholding the restrictions related to liquor sales which some delight in pointing out.

However, I would agree we are not lacking in liquor access currently and maybe it is not good public policy to make something that can have negative impacts even more widely available.

Some economics from the GoA:

Business Formation - Formation eases
The number of incorporated businesses in Alberta continued to decline in September. The three-month moving average number of business formations fell 1.9% m/m to an average of 5,053 on a seasonally adjusted basis. Despite the ongoing downward trend, the number of incorporations in the province remains well above last year’s level and are up 14% year-to-date

I think the main reason behind this was that alot of our current liquor stores are small businesses, whereas almost all of the grocery and convenience stores are part of large chains. Changing the rules would benefit corporations at the expense of small businesses.

Now that I think about it, I'm surprised and kind of impressed the UCP didn't go for it.

I suspect those small business owners are more reliable supporters, financial and otherwise, for the UCP than large out of province chains.

While there are certainly some small business/specialty liquor stores, I would guess the majority of vendors in the market by both number (ie SNDL which includes Wine & Beyond, Liquor Depot, and Ace) and volume (ie Costco) are not small businesses.
