The side of the heritage facade has to be a solid surface - otherwise it would destabilize the appearance of the facade - it would look like it is freestanding at the sidewalk - making the facadism even more apparent.

Such an idea could work well but using solid filler makes the "heritage facade" seem more stand-alone. Pedestrians won't be as tuned in to how it is part of the tower and even if they are, it will look more cohesive to them.

Yes, the escalators on the east side of the ground floor are for access to the concourse/retail level and the PATH.
