There was a recent discussion about this on Twitter. This was the reply from someone who works for the City of Calgary.
Y'know what would be awesome? If they're tearing up the whole street anyways, put in the tubing for a snowmelt system and hook it up to the district heating plant 🤔

The other factor is maintenance. Some of the heat loops will inevitably break and we will have to rip up half the street to repair or replace it. Some places in Scandinavia do heated sidewalks, not sure how they make the cost work.

Mostly waste heat from large industrial facilities or waste to energy. Getting used to melt before the pipes were insulated!

Hopefully they don't put the cycle lane between traffic and parked cars like they have now.

15th ave looks great! Not as sure about 14th ave. It would be nice to see wider sidewalks and the grass isn't going to be doing much, and will never be very nice anyways. Drivers getting in and out of their cars will be stepping all over the grass.

I don’t think the rendering shows the true scale of what the sidewalks will be, there’s barely enough room for a wheelchair to use them. They’ll probably be four or 5 inches wider than what is shown in the rendering..
