Another detour that will affect people coming from the east side of the city:

What the city can't tell you is to just cut through Max Bell's parking lot to join the detour just west of the building. NO ONE coming from the N.E. end of the map is going to use the 24th street detour, unless they have not been through the area before. Even Barlow Trail is better if you don't mind the traffic. Strangely, the city is not telling you to dismount and walk your bike across the irrigation canal and Deerfoot Trail bridges. Must have gotten by the safety auditors on that one.

Disappointing that the article overlooks the impressive gains for pedestrians and cycling and focuses only on increases to driving. Looking at only SVO it was an 11.3% increase but when you look at pedestrian and bike increases it was 20.5% and 22.6% respectively. And yet any new pedestrian or cycling infrastructure improvements are continually faced with stiff opposition

Perhaps a contributing factor to the "reduced congestion" is also more bikers and walkers
 
If any of you use the irrigation canal to head south of 17 Ave S.E., both sides of the pathway will be closed soon (should have been already according to the sign). The Calgary Cycling app is wrong and omits the closure on the west side. The sign I found to the north of 17th correctly depicts the closure, even if they forgot to draw the rest of the west side pathway :)

As of last week the MUP around the Zoo is open again. Also yesterday the new underpass at the Baines bridge (the little bridge that connects Memorial drive to St. Patrick's island) opened up too.
 
Also a couple of upcoming Bike Calgary events:

Winter Bike Photo Booth: Hop on your bike, bring a friend, family member, or coworker and celebrate winter cycling at the 5 Annual Winter Bike Photo Booth Wednesday, February 7, 3:30pm - 5:30pm.

Enjoy free hot chocolate (bring your own mug to cut down on waste), pick up a Pathway & Bikeway map, a new winter sticker for your bike and have your photo taken by local photographer Steve Coutts.

This event is a chance to celebrate the diversity of people who bike year round in Calgary and provide information to people who are interested in cycling more in the winter. Everyone is welcome.

Find the photo booth on the south side of the Bow River Pathway between the Peace Bridge and the 10 Street LRT Bridge.

Winter Bike to Work Day: Friday, February 9 from 7-9 am at Eau Claire Market. Come meet the people you bike past wearing layers of clothing every day. Exchange tips and tricks for dealing with snow and ice, discover new routes, and learn new maintenance hacks to keep your ride on the road. Free breakfast for the first 100 cyclists.

Awesome news. I look forward to checking it out when I'm back home. So many positive things with cycling in Calgary the last couple of years.
