Didn't want to put this in the green line thread... They've got new ideas over at Waterous and they're... Interesting?


"If CPKC gets on board, the province can build CADE from the airport to downtown within the CPKC rail corridor and then elevate the track for 5.5 km between the Bow River and 11th Street S.W. CADE’s 2.4-km downtown section could include three new stations along 9th Avenue: Downtown East (at 4th Street S.E. — Grand Central Station), Midtown (at 3rd Street S.W.) and Downtown West (at 11th Street S.W)."

No way it happens. I like the Waterous' though, they're like us but have money.

They want the province to build this elevated part and all of the +15s??

The CADE Plus-15 solution addresses all previously identified issues. The Green Line is integrated at ground level at the Downtown East Station, just south of the CPKC rail corridor. Green Line passengers then walk to the Blue Line and Red Line via a new Plus-15 along 9th Avenue, and then north on 3rd Street S.E. behind City Hall to 7th Avenue. This roughly 500-metre walk is similar to the distance riders in Toronto walk between the Union Pearson Express from Union Station to the Union Station subway line.

The Green Line 4th St station to City Hall station is like 630 meters as the crow flies...at the most optimistic this would be like 800 meters + ascending and descending multiple levels. Is she proposing a +15 over 3rd Street SE, too? What problem does this solve that the 4th St underpass doesn't?

It seems they are worried that elevated GL destroys their own pipe dream. They can't negotiate use of one of CPKC's 4 tracks through DT?

Nice of them to suggest a NEW Optional UG station for the red line less than 300 metres from City Hall...for some reason. That's actually closer than the Centre St station to City Hall. It's optional though, so that's cool.

Slap another few +15s into the west. Do they know that the Chinook mall +15 cost $13M (~2017) for like 160 meters?

We'll just ignore the bridge over the Bow River for a moment to tell you how great this WILL be for CPKC. (is it just me or does the "NOT" seem like a funny choice here?)


These people failed to get a comparatively simple gondola approved in Banff. Meanwhile Lake Louise will be opening their 3rd new lift in the last 4 years, and apparently next year they are even doing a lift to Richardson's Ridge, which has been desired since the 80s. Even the idiots running Sunshine have managed a few major lift upgrades.

I'm sure the Waterous's are lovely people and their heart is in the right place, but this is amateur hour. What's the strategy here? Are they really trying to negotiate in public with CPKC and the province? We know one of those parties DGAF what Calgarians think, and the other one REALLY DGAF was Calgarians think! But maybe this op-ed and video will achieve a groundswell of support...???

I can only imagine the number of zeros on any cheque CPKC would want for the disruption from demolishing two parkades above their line, building 3 stations above their line and building that long of an elevated track ....... Above their line.
I thought that the Provincial rail plan was back of napkin stuff but this knocks that out the park .

What parts of "NOT impacted" and "this couldn't be easier" do you not understand?!?!?!
 
Wonder if the rail regulations saying freight has right of way over passenger will change? I don’t think so, they got them to stop a strike after a few hours.
 
What's the deal with the 12-14m requirement? Aren't there dozens of crossings that are much lower? Or are they just setting a new standard for decades down the line when other things reach life cycle?

Also, does CPKC really need all 4 tracks through DT? I suppose they must think so since they just spent a bunch on a new bridge to achieve 4 tracks from DT through to Ramsay, but I'm surprised the DT sections seems to be a bigger hurdle than the single track sections over/near the river that will be expensive to twin. I spend a fair bit of time at Edworthy and it's hard to square how busy the tracks actually are...sometimes it's be hours without a train.
 
The other risk is they pull a province of AB, commit to building it, and when we build the CADE, they say oops no money for the CABR.
The Banff link can free stand. the province wants to own it though so needs to figure out an arrangement the province is happy with to buy it.

The regulation doesn’t work like that. It is more of a ‘you get what you pay for’. The Banff link will more than quadruple capacity between Calgary and Banff. Part of the arrangement has been envisioned for a long time as the link rents capacity on the mainline for contingency use and rents the ROW in exchange for CP having access to that excess capacity when not needed otherwise for passenger service.

Sometimes it really depends on how busy the crowsnest pass is as they work together to some degree due to shared capacity west of golden. Each can handle up to 35, 37 maybe trains a day if the other has 0.

There is also that they hold a lot of recovery capacity in the winter, yet fall harvest is peak shipping.

With various strikes, washouts, accidents, maintenance needs which reduce capacity.

The four tracks right now are about train building iirc more than anything else. It was cheaper to close the crossing by penguin car wash and build the bridge than to relocate activities. At the same time the move reduced train building happening over 11th SW.

Land works is what railways are good at. As long as there aren’t too many aesthetic preferences we can still build for cheap.

It is amazing what can be done when the scope is locked in place and the nearly the only thing that matters. Almost the total opposite of our typical municipal way of doing.

The “what if we also do this” with infrastructure projects is out of control. IMO simpler is timeless I like the simplicity of that CPKC bridge over the elbow.
 

It's expected to take four to five years to design the future high-speed line. Funds are to be allocated at the end of that time period, so it's possible a future government could modify or cancel the project.

Want to be excited but wonder if this will be killed by a subsequent government. It is easy to kill this at any point over the next four to five years. Excited for the provincial rail plan next spring, Danielle will be through her leadership pandering by then.

I got all excited and thought this was about the Calgary to Bsnff/Edmonton projects. 😢
