Most Island nations to our south have not prospered over time. Cuba has held her own. We can't change what has happened between the U.S. and Cuba but it's time to acknowledge the flawed feud between the two countries and support positive change towards a normalized relationship. Certainly Cuba would welcome American dollars as we do here in Canada.

^Yep, very properous - where they had a problem with locals prostituting themselves for the price of a hamburger after the Soviet Union cut the subsidies to Cuba after the fall of the Soviet Union.

Go look in your own city, women prostitute themselves for a meal as well. While we are on that topic, go have a look at human trafficking in the western world.

I didn't say Cuba was a prosperous nation, I said that despite the American embargo Cuba has done as well as other islands to the south of North America, who do experience American "intervention". Haiti for example just got a big fat taste of American "help" a few years back by having their elected president flown out of their country without a choice.....from his own mouth as the jet landed in South Africa as he was "escorted" by Americans. I suppose it's all about which dictator you support.

^ There is no equivalency. We might have a few women who end up in prostitution out of some rather unfortunate circumstances (abuse, drugs, etc) but it does not compare to having women forced into prostitution out of economic necessity....moreover that necessity brought on by poor economic policies of the government. Castro wiped out a good chunk of the middle class when he took over and much of Cuba's population has never recovered from that blow.

Are you enthralled with Castro because of his anti-Americanism? Would you be equally supportive of a dictator if he was a right wing nutjob? Perhaps you like Chavez's stunts as well....particularly his effort at getting elected president for life. Personally, I can't support any government that would oppress their people regardless of what side of the spectrum their from. And I would love to see Canada have a principled foreign policy that espouses a similar stance.

When it comes to our policy, I would not say that we should embargo Cuba because embargos tend to hurt the people as opposed to the elites. But I would have no problem with imposing travel restrictions on the ruling class in Cuba. They should not be given travel visas to Canada, their kids should not be given student visas, etc. We do the same thing to Iran right now. Why not for Cuba which is equally oppressive in certain areas (political expression for example)?

ps. Citing Global research as an authoritative source is like saying the Fraser Institute should get the final word on tax policy in Canada.

your people, the americans, are very supportive of dictatorships. Look at Chilie or Iraq as perfect examples.

My people? We've already been through this in another thread.

1) I am not american.
2) If I was, why should it matter?
3) I have never been supportive of propping up dictators anywhere particularly if they are the kind who oppress their own people (the benevolent dictator is a rather elusive figure in history).
4) That was exactly my argument. Jade_lee gushes over Castro. Would she be equally enthralled by Pinochet? Or is there a double standard at play? Left wing anti-american dictators good. Right wing pro-US dictators bad.

Add to that, the overwhelming presumption (belief) that over 300 million people within one country all think and act exactly the same way with respect to dictatorship.

The americans were, yet, they don't like Castro...hypocrisy at its best!

And if you read my post, I said that such hypocrisy was wrong. It could be argued that the Cold war was different because the Americans backed their bunch and the Soviets theirs (including Castro). But in today's world I don't see what the point is of maintaining the embargo. It's good to see Obama make headway on reversing this policy. But on the topic of this thread, that we have 'got it right on Cuba' I think we should be a little more modest in our boasts.

digi,

Are all Americans pro-dictatorship and supportive of the Pinochet regime? Would you happen to have any actual proof of that? Can Fidel Castro be defined as a democrat and supporter of open political exchange within the country that he has ruled for decades (without democratic, multi-party elections)?

A tad bit curious...

The thread was started to suggest that perhaps had JfK lived the American embargo would have been different or withdrawn as a way to deal with Cuba and Castro. Canada has weathered the cold war maintaining a trading relationship with Cuba despite the American view and embargo. If others think this was not the right way to go about it they clearly are not on the same page as the rest of us here in Canada about Cuba and about how to communicate with Castro.....the dictator. I would pick Castro anyday over Bush jr. That son of a Bush! But I suppose fake election results are not included when considering dictatorships eh.

You need proof? What a joke. What the government supports ie CIA intervention represents the people no? The American government acted badly with respect to the Pinochet regime but apparently you forgot. The mothers of missing people there never forgot....go read all about it.

Trouble reading again jade_lee? Sure looks like it.

So smart guy, prove that all Americans are pro-dictatorship. That was the content of my quote which you so vigorously disputed above. Show proof, illustrate it, provide evidence, deliver substantiation. In case you are unaware, the CIA does not represent the entire American populace.

And provide evidence that Fidel Castro was not a dictator while he ran Cuba.

Rather than hide behind your terribly weak attempts at diversion like an intellectual light-weight, address the content of my post. And while you're at it, learn some nuance.
