^ There is no equivalency. We might have a few women who end up in prostitution out of some rather unfortunate circumstances (abuse, drugs, etc) but it does not compare to having women forced into prostitution out of economic necessity....moreover that necessity brought on by poor economic policies of the government. Castro wiped out a good chunk of the middle class when he took over and much of Cuba's population has never recovered from that blow.
Are you enthralled with Castro because of his anti-Americanism? Would you be equally supportive of a dictator if he was a right wing nutjob? Perhaps you like Chavez's stunts as well....particularly his effort at getting elected president for life. Personally, I can't support any government that would oppress their people regardless of what side of the spectrum their from. And I would love to see Canada have a principled foreign policy that espouses a similar stance.
When it comes to our policy, I would not say that we should embargo Cuba because embargos tend to hurt the people as opposed to the elites. But I would have no problem with imposing travel restrictions on the ruling class in Cuba. They should not be given travel visas to Canada, their kids should not be given student visas, etc. We do the same thing to Iran right now. Why not for Cuba which is equally oppressive in certain areas (political expression for example)?
ps. Citing Global research as an authoritative source is like saying the Fraser Institute should get the final word on tax policy in Canada.
