The Toronto Star issued a correction to their reporting on Pusetiri's:

An Aug. 22 business section article about Pusateri’s Fine Foods incorrectly reported that Pusateri’s owed creditors $37 million: $8 million at its Yorkville location, $10.1 million at its Bayview location, and $19.3 million at its prep kitchen, Pusateri’s Kitchen Ltd. These figures were incorrect due to a misinterpretation of the insolvency filings. In fact, the corrected figures are $178,000 at Yorkville; $853,000 at Bayview, $583,000 at its prep kitchen, and $4.9 million to Scotiabank, for a total of $6.6 million.

Some vendors state they are owed less than the insolvency filings:

The five unsecured creditors listed which are owed the most across all locations are Happy Pops Inc., owed more than $117,000; Rahier Patisserie, $74,700; KeHe Distributors, $47,600; Martelli Foods Inc., $41,700, and Lesley’s Party Sandwiches is owed around $31,600.

Since publication of this article, some suppliers have come forward to contest the figures.

“To clarify, the amount owed to Martelli Foods is $1,306.40,” wrote Rosa Martelli, employee in the accounts receivable department of Martelli Foods, in an email. The figure published by the insolvency trustee is not correct, she added.
Leila Keshavjee, owner of Happy Pops, does not believe her figure is correct either. She said the company is owed just $1,065.43.

Interesting to see two high end grocers struggle (this one and McEwan); and could throw the small 'fresh city' concept in there as well.......

While Eataly goes gangbusters, and another high end grocer will be adding new outposts, in the next year or two. ;)

Speaks to the perils of debt, ego, over-expansion, poor locations and all/around management issues.

In the case of McEwan, rescued out of bankruptcy by a long time, very affluent patron.

Clearly, Toronto has a market in the luxury food segment. But some are better able to capitalize on that than others.
Long live Summerhill market !

A note here on the rollout of booze to grocery stores.

I still count only about 4 new licenses issued, for grocers who were not previously offering booze.

Sobeys - Danforth
Sobeys Urban Fresh Balliol
King Fresh Food Mart (Metro Centre)
Longos Market Brookfield Place.

That's it.

They are really digging in their heels it would seem on the deposit/return business.

The Richmond / John No Frills is apparently opening next Thursday, September 12th

Actually, I am quite happy about this as there is nowhere within a 20-min walk from me to get beer (that's not from a bar).

There are a few convenience stores in the area that are approved. Notably the Daisy Mart at Dawes/Secord and the Petro Canada at Danforth/Gledhill.

I can see that ending well..

Why wouldn't it?

Really Richard, you're coming off as really angry at the world today..........

No one seems to be able to do anything successfully.

I just know the area having grown up and passing through there regularly.

Dawes is not exactly Forest Hill.

Financially it will do well but I can see a number of issues cropping up with the local clientele.

As someone who actually lives nearby, and has for decades.......sure, its not Forest Hlll, but nowhere near as problem plagued as you make it out to be.

The Metro at Eglinton and Lloyd Manor has been selling RTD coolers and huge cases of beer for a couple of weeks now.
